COURSE OVERVIEW:

Operations management is the direction and control of the processes that transform inputs into outputs for customers—finished goods or services. It entails the design and control of systems responsible for the productive use of raw materials, human resources, equipment, and facilities in developing goods and/or services.

The fundamental work of operations management consists of three steps: plan, implement the plan, and monitor the processes.

The design of a product—whether goods or services—consists of deciding on the purposes, characteristics, materials, customer benefits, and performance standards of the product. The design of the process to produce that product consists of deciding on the activities, the flows of those activities, the facilities and equipment, the materials, the labour, the time, and the costs.

Decisions about product design and process design are typically made at the same time, together. They both determine product quality, product cost, and customer satisfaction. Together, product design and process design represent an important strategic decision for an organisation, because they contribute to shaping the competitive position of the organisation, defining its identity and image, and helping or hindering its growth.

After developing an operations strategy, the operations manager has to decide what to produce and how, where, and when to produce it. These activities include designing the product or service and designing the implementation or execution processes.

The first part of this course provides an overview of operations management including: the fundamental work of operations management, how all of us are operations managers and how operations managers plan, implement the plan, and monitor the processes.

The second part discusses product design and process development including: the operations management team, operations strategy, goods vs. services, product design, process selection, process analysis and process performance metrics.
