COURSE OVERVIEW:

Child maltreatment is behaviour toward a child that is outside the norms of conduct and entails substantial risk of causing physical or emotional harm. Four types of maltreatment are generally recognised: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse (psychologic abuse), and neglect.

The causes of child maltreatment are varied and not well understood. Abuse and neglect are often associated with physical injuries, delayed growth and development, and mental problems.

There are four major types of maltreatment: physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Although any of the forms of child maltreatment may be found separately, they often occur in combination. Also abandonment and parental substance abuse are also defined as forms of child abuse or neglect.

Child maltreatment causes suffering to children and families and can have long-term consequences. Maltreatment causes stress that is associated with disruption in early brain development. Extreme stress can impair the development of the nervous and immune systems. Consequently, as adults, maltreated children are at increased risk for behavioural, physical and mental health problems.

This courses explains the definitions and types of child abuse and neglect. Warning signs and symptoms of child maltreatment are discussed along with information about how parental substance abuse and domestic violence experiences increase the likelihood of child abuse and neglect. Then explains the risk and protective factors for child abuse and neglect.
