COURSE OVERVIEW:

The flow of materials and information through a process to deliver a product or service to a customer is known as the value stream. A Value Stream Map is a graphical representation of the value stream. The Value Stream Map has an enterprise focus, instead of a functional one, because it covers all the activities required to bring the product or service to fruition. It depicts all the steps and highlights any ineffectiveness in the value stream.

A Value Stream Map is a graphical representation of how all the steps in any process line up to produce a product or service, as well as the flow of information that triggers the process into action. In the product world, the process may be about something physical, like making a car, creating a design, or authoring a report. In the service world, the process may be calling a help desk, buying pre-prepared food for dinner, or obtaining a driver’s licence.

A Value Stream Map plots the course from the input of raw materials through to the delivery of the finished goods or services to the customer. The customer identified at the end of a Value Stream Map is not necessarily the end customer or consumer who buys or consumes the final product or service; the customer may be another business or even someone or some other function within your own organisation.

A Value Stream Map flows from left to right with time — raw materials come in on the left, the process steps line up in order of occurrence, and the finished products or services exit to the right. The main flow is like the river channel, and the ancillary processes are like tributaries that feed the main process.

This course introduces and explains the process of Value Stream Mapping, one of the key tools of Lean and then explains how to use a Value Stream Map to define where you want to go and how you’ll approach getting there.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this course, you will be able to understand:

·       What is meant by value stream mapping?

·       The purpose of a value stream map

·       Who uses a value stream map?

·       The elements of a value stream map

·       How to identify the natural owner of the VSM?

·       The supporting information needed to build a VSM

·       How to create the current-state value stream map?

·       How to quantify the process and qualify the value-added (VA) and non-value-added (NVA) activities?

·       How to decide what is value-added and what is non-value-added?

·       The box score and takt time

·       How to validate the value stream map?

·       How to analyse and use the value stream maps?

·       How to investigate the value stream for clues?

·       The lean sensei’s view as the master and teacher of the Lean principles and knowledge

·       How to create the ideal-state value stream map?

·       How to mark-up the current-state VSM?

·       How to evaluate and analyse the Current-State Value Stream from the perspective of the engineering disciplines?

·       How to analyse the value stream from a quality perspective?

·       How to analyse the value stream from a production-manufacturing engineering perspective?

·       How to analyse the value stream from a design engineering perspective?

·       How to analyse the value stream from a maintenance/equipment engineering perspective?

·       What makes a VSM so useful, as opposed to standard process-flow diagrams?

·       Why create an Ideal-State Value Stream Map?

·       Where is the best place to start with value stream mapping?

·       What is the “right” level of detail?

·       What is the difference between the macro view of the value stream and the value stream map?

·       Which is better: creating a manual VSM or using a software package to create the VSM?

·       How to VSM the same product made in different places?
