COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course is designed to enhance understanding, sensitivity, and support for individuals within the LGBTQIA+ communities. In this introductory module, we will explore key concepts, challenges, and support strategies relevant to serving LGBTQIA+ individuals in community services.
Understanding LGBTQIA+ identities is fundamental to providing effective support. We will delve into definitions and terminology related to LGBTQIA+, highlighting the diverse identities and experiences within these communities. Additionally, we will discuss the historical context of LGBTQIA+ rights, including milestones in advocacy and activism, as well as current laws, policies, and rights that affect LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Social attitudes, stigma, and discrimination continue to pose challenges for LGBTQIA+ communities. We will examine these issues and explore advocacy efforts aimed at promoting equality and acceptance. Intersectionality is also a critical aspect to consider, as LGBTQIA+ individuals often face unique challenges when intersecting with other marginalized identities.
The health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ individuals are of utmost importance. We will address health disparities, barriers to healthcare, and mental health issues commonly faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals.
