COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Plan Assessment Activities & Processes in Vocational Education course. This program is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively plan and implement assessment activities and processes within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. By the end of this course, you will be adept at designing, developing, and validating assessment plans and instruments that meet the required standards and support competency-based assessment.

We begin with the essential task of determining the assessment approach. This involves selecting the most appropriate methods and strategies to assess the competencies of your candidates. Understanding how to identify candidates and confirm the purposes and context of assessment or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with relevant stakeholders is crucial for tailored and effective assessment planning.

Accessing the necessary benchmarks for assessment and RPL, including specific assessment guidelines, is a key step. You will learn to identify and access these benchmarks, ensuring that your assessments are aligned with the required standards.

Preparing an assessment plan is a fundamental skill you will develop. This includes determining the evidence required and the types of evidence needed to demonstrate competence, in accordance with the rules of evidence. You will also learn to develop simple assessment instruments tailored to the needs of your target group.

Analysing available assessment instruments for their suitability and making necessary modifications is another important aspect. You will gain skills in mapping assessment instruments against unit or course requirements to ensure comprehensive coverage of the competencies being assessed.

Clear communication with candidates is vital for effective assessment. You will learn to write clear instructions for candidates on the use of assessment instruments. Additionally, you will trial draft assessment instruments to validate their content and applicability, recording the outcomes to inform any necessary adjustments.

The course also covers the ethical and legal requirements of an assessor, ensuring that you understand and adhere to the professional standards expected in the VET sector. Competency-based assessment principles will be explored, highlighting their importance and application in the assessment process.

You will be introduced to the different purposes of assessment and various assessment contexts, including RPL. This includes learning how to read and interpret identified competency standards as benchmarks for assessment, and how to contextualise these standards within relevant guidelines.

The four principles of assessment – fairness, flexibility, validity, and reliability – will guide your assessment processes. Understanding the purpose and features of evidence, the different types of evidence used in competency-based assessments, and the rules of evidence will enhance your evidence collection strategies.

Different types of assessment methods and their suitability for collecting various types of evidence will be discussed. You will also learn about assessment instruments, their purpose, different types, and the relevance of specific instruments for particular evidence-gathering opportunities.

This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the planning and implementation of assessment activities and processes in VET. You will leave equipped with the practical skills to develop, trial, and validate assessment instruments, ensuring they meet the required standards and effectively support competency-based assessments.

This course is designed to align with the content outlined in the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency TAEASS401B.
