COURSE OVERVIEW:
Parkinson disease (PD) is a journey—a journey that, once started, will last a lifetime. Many people have taken this journey, have described the pitfalls, and have mapped the course. It is not a journey someone will take alone: A person with PD family, friends, and neighbours will come with them.
They will meet many travellers along the way and will have several doctors who will serve as guides—to help them through the rough places, to point out the dangers, and to provide assurance and understanding. The many travellers who have taken this journey know it well and can tell them how they overcame the obstacles: They shouldn’t neglect them—they should listen to them! Although the journey is not a pleasure cruise, they can be comforted because they are not alone.
PD can start slowly, so slowly that it’s scarcely noticed. A slight tremor in the hand—it could be stress, couldn’t it? A twitch in the shoulder—it could be a muscle strain, couldn’t it? The spouse asks why they don’t smile any more. Their children ask why they walk slowly. They ignore their comments, but in their heart, they know they mean something. Things just don’t feel right. Finally, they make an appointment with their doctor and are told that it could be PD.
Parkinson’s Disease is a disorder of the nervous system which causes progressive deterioration of movement, control and balance. There are many causes but unfortunately, no cure. However, many symptoms of the disease can be managed and many people with Parkinson’s lead fulfilling, happy lives for many years after diagnosis.
