OURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Brain-Based Learning for Adult Training course. This program will equip you with the skills and knowledge to design, deliver, and refine training that aligns with how the adult brain actually learns, remembers, and applies new information. Throughout this course, you will learn how to make your training more engaging, memorable, and effective by using brain-friendly strategies that support attention, meaning, and long-term retention.
This course begins by introducing what brain-based learning is and outlining the core principles that guide brain-compatible training design. It explains how a healthy body promotes a healthy mind, how emotions are key to memory, meaning, and attention, and how interaction with others benefits brain development. It also shows how teaching each other boosts memory, how memory improves through practice, why long lectures should be avoided, how to make training sessions meaningful, how to move information from short- to long-term memory, how to utilise humour, storytelling, movement, and games, and how reducing stress leads to more effective learning.
The course then explores what current brain research reveals about learning so that you can translate neuroscience insights into practical training choices. This section explains the facts of the dynamic brain and how adult learners can continue to grow new connections, and shows how to expand learner horizons using new perspectives from brain research. This section also describes typical left and right brain functioning, introduces ways to “turn on your SUPERBRAIN”, explains how learning occurs at a cognitive and neurological level, contrasts pedagogy with andragogy, and outlines how to guide participant learning in ways that respect adult experience and autonomy.
Understanding learner differences and preferences is then examined so you can design learning that works for a wide range of participants. This section introduces learning modalities in action, explains the characteristics of auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic/tactile learners, and shows how to appeal to these modalities through varied activities and materials. This section also outlines the stages of learning, introduces Gardner’s eight intelligences, and explains how to address multiple intelligences in your training so that participants can connect with content through their strengths while developing new capabilities.
Creating and sustaining a brain-friendly learning environment is then explored to support attention, engagement, and psychological safety. This section explains how to create a stimulating learning environment that helps involve and interest participants, and how to enrich the learning environment through layout, resources, and facilitation style. This section also describes how to increase attentiveness, identifies factors that inhibit attention, sets out techniques for helping participants remain focused, and explains how to gain and hold participant attention throughout a session or program.
The workings of memory and practical strategies to strengthen recall are then examined in detail so that learning translates into lasting competence. This section explains the marvel of memory, the stages of memory from encoding to retrieval, and the main categories and types of memory that matter for training design. This section also outlines how to help the brain remember by structuring content, spacing practice, and linking ideas, and provides specific techniques to aid participant memory so that new knowledge and skills are easier to retain and apply back in the workplace.
By the end of this course, you will be able to explain the principles of brain-based learning, design adult training that supports meaning, attention, and emotional engagement, and tailor activities to different learning modalities and intelligences. You will know how to create stimulating, low-stress learning environments, build in opportunities for interaction and teaching others, and use practical memory techniques to move information from short- to long-term memory. Most importantly, you will be equipped to apply brain-based strategies systematically so that your training sessions become more impactful, learner-centred, and aligned with how adults actually learn and change.
