COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course is designed to equip counsellors with the knowledge, skills, and ethical considerations necessary to effectively address clients' needs and issues using a range of counselling therapies.

In Section A, we will delve into the legal and ethical considerations that govern the use of counselling therapies, ensuring that participants understand the boundaries and responsibilities involved in their practice. We will also explore the diverse issues and concerns with which clients may present, including their characteristics, and examine the types of counselling therapies that may be employed in response to these issues.

Participants will gain insight into the features of different counselling therapies, allowing for a nuanced understanding of their applications, benefits, and limitations. Additionally, we will explore the concept of combining different therapies to address particular needs, providing participants with a holistic approach to counselling intervention.

Indicators of clients' issues requiring referral will be discussed, equipping participants with the ability to identify when a client may benefit from additional or specialised support. We will also highlight credible sources of information on counselling therapies and trends, ensuring that participants stay informed and up-to-date in their practice.

In Section B, participants will learn how to analyse client needs, issues, and desired changes to be addressed, incorporating an understanding of the client's developmental status and response to change. Co-existing issues will be considered in selecting courses of action, and participants will learn to interpret information about counselling therapies to determine their application, benefits, and limitations in addressing clients' needs, issues, and goals.

The course will also focus on helping participants identify their own level of comfort and issues in relation to using identified counselling techniques, ensuring that they approach their practice with self-awareness and reflexivity. Participants will learn to communicate details of therapies to be used with clients using language the client understands and document these in client records.

Effective use of counselling skills in the context of each counselling modality and technique will be emphasised, along with the ability to combine techniques and processes from different therapies in an effective and integrated manner. Participants will also learn to evaluate the use of techniques and therapies in the context of individual clients and reflect on their role as counsellors, identifying areas for future improvement.

In addition, participants will learn how to apply their knowledge and skills to provide counselling to different clients, cumulatively using different counselling therapies. Various issues such as anxiety, family issues, grief and loss, parenting, pregnancy, relationship issues, self-esteem, social isolation, and stress management will be addressed, allowing participants to develop a comprehensive approach to counselling within their scope of practice.

This course is designed to align with the content outlined in the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency CHCCSL006.
