COURSE OVERVIEW:
Social and emotional development means how children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling and what to expect when interacting with others. It is the development of being able to:
- Form and sustain positive relationships.
- Experience, manage and express emotions.
- Explore and engage with the environment.
Positive social and emotional development is important. This development influences the child’s self-confidence, empathy, the ability to develop meaningful and lasting friendships and partnerships, and a sense of importance and value to those around him/her. Children’s social and emotional development also influences all other areas of development.
Parents, practitioners and caregivers play the biggest role in social and emotional development because they offer the most consistent relationships for the child. Consistent experiences with family members, teachers and other adults help children learn about relationships and explore emotions in predictable interactions.
Children’s social development is closely related to their emotional development. Children who can control their feelings, such as anger or excitement, are more likely to be able to engage in positive play with other children and negotiate difficulties with others when they arise. Equally, children who understand the feelings of others will be better able to be sensitive to the needs of other children during play.
Therefore, social development refers to the process by which a child learns to interact with others around them and how a child develops friendships and other relationships, as well how a child handles conflict with peers. While, emotional development refers to the emergence of the experience, expression, understanding, and regulation of emotions from birth and the growth and change in these capacities throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
The first part of this course starts by explaining the importance of very early attachment for babies and children. Then discusses how to recognise and promote children’s personal development as individuals. Then explains how to support children’s social development and the formation of friendships from an early age. Also, shows how to recognise and support the social skills that children need to develop within play.
The second part begins by explaining how to understand and appreciate children’s emotional development. Then discusses the ways to support children as they learn emotional literacy. Then identifies ways to support children in distress or who are experiencing family upheaval. Also, explains how children develop moral ideas and reasoning. Finally, discusses how to appreciate and support children’s spiritual development.
