COURSE OVERVIEW:

Assertiveness is a way of life, a way of doing business based on mutual respect and regard. It is very much about developing relationships with each other that are based on trust, respect, openness, and honesty. Assertive relationships are those in which people seek to understand each other, to acknowledge their differences, to challenge and support each other, to be open and honest with each other.

Developing assertiveness and assertive relationships takes courage and a willingness to question personal values. It means being open to change and to new possibilities of “being”—thinking and feeling—and “doing”—behaving.

Assertiveness is a personal journey of self-awareness and curiosity, of developing a strong and integrated sense of self. It is an interpersonal journey in which people engage and connect with others, with their differences and similarities, and together create organisations that are truly inclusive and assertive.

The first part of this course describes what assertiveness is, and provides insights into assertiveness and the skills of developing assertiveness.  Also offers a number of different approaches to understanding what assertiveness really is.

The second part highlights the importance of positive self-assertion, and how this can be developed through a process of personal inquiry into values and beliefs about self and others, leading to the development of positive and affirming beliefs that underpin assertive behaviour. Finally, the course explores and clarifies key assertive communication behaviours and skills.
