COURSE OVERVIEW:
In this course we will explore how various learning theories can be effectively integrated into counselling practice to facilitate positive behavioural change and personal growth in clients. Understanding the principles and applications of learning theories is essential for counsellors to tailor their interventions to meet the unique needs of each client and support them in achieving their therapeutic goals.
In Section A of this course, we will delve into the overarching types of learning theories and their relevance to counselling practice. You will learn about the principles and practices of different specific learning theories, with a particular focus on the application of stimulus and response theory in counselling settings. We will explore how environmental factors, childhood influences, peer group pressures, and modelling and reinforcement influences can impact behaviour. Additionally, you will gain insight into the features and differences of operant and classical conditioning, as well as the principles and practices of reinforcement and consequences in counselling contexts.
In Section B, you will develop practical skills to apply learning theories in counselling practice. You will learn how to identify and access sources of information on learning theories, interpret key themes and messages, and organise and record information to support current and future practice. Through case studies and scenarios, you will analyse the impact of modelling influences, environmental differences, and dysfunctional environments on client behaviour. You will also learn to apply stimulus and response techniques and reinforcement approaches to support behaviour change, and develop processes for program monitoring, recording, and intervention tailored to individual client needs.
In addition, you will further enhance your skills by utilising critical thinking to research and evaluate information from different sources about various learning theories. You will integrate theoretical approaches to develop programs for behaviour change with different clients, applying a holistic and client-centred approach to counselling practice.
By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to effectively apply learning theories in counselling, empowering clients to make positive changes and lead fulfilling lives.
This course is designed to align with the content outlined in the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency CHCCSL005.
