COURSE OVERVIEW:
In this course we will explore essential techniques and procedures for safely assisting individuals with various movements in different settings. Whether you are a caregiver, healthcare professional, or support worker, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively assist individuals in maintaining mobility and independence.
In Section A, we will begin by understanding the basic principles of body biomechanics and the structure of soft tissues and joints. You will learn about the importance of maintaining skin integrity and the policies and procedures governing movement assistance within organisations. We will also delve into infection control practices, supervisory protocols, and legal and ethical considerations relevant to assisting with movement.
Additionally, you will gain insight into identifying risk factors and techniques for assisting individuals when the environment or residence lacks custom-fitted aids. Throughout this section, you will learn various techniques for assisting with movement, including actions to take during a fall, active and passive movement, assistance with repositioning, and emergency assistance procedures.
In Section B, we will focus on practical skills and procedures for assisting with movement. You will learn how to confirm requirements and risk factors for assisting individuals with movement, select and adjust equipment according to individual needs, and prepare the environment for safe movement. Effective communication with the person being assisted, obtaining consent, and ensuring comfort and safety throughout the movement process will also be covered.
Additionally, you will learn how to properly clean and maintain equipment, as well as report any faults or issues according to organisational procedures and industry standards.
Furthermore, you will understand how to provide assistance with various movements in different scenarios. From assisting a person up off the floor to transferring between wheelchair and bed, you will learn how to demonstrate your ability to assist individuals safely and effectively in different situations.
By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to assist individuals with movement, promoting their safety, comfort, and well-being.
This course is designed to align with the content outlined in the Nationally Recognised Unit of Competency CHCCCS002.

· Utilising mobility aids owned by or associated with the person
Section B: Performance Tasks
· Confirm requirements and risk factors for assisting a person with movement with relevant personnel, individualised plan or organisation policy and procedures
· Select, prepare and adjust equipment according to the person’s requirements and the individualised plan
· Appropriately prepare environment
· Explain the procedure to the person and answer questions as required and according to appropriate communication protocols
· Seek the person’s consent and cooperation
· Carry out preparation procedures according to safe working practices
· Carry out movement using appropriate safe handling method and equipment using a range of techniques
· Take appropriate action to ensure the person’s comfort and safety throughout positioning or transfer
· Encourage the person to assist with movement where possible
· Communicate with the person during movement according to appropriate protocols
· Return equipment to appropriate place as required
· Clean equipment in accordance with organisation policy and procedures
· Report equipment faults immediately in accordance with organisation procedures, industry standards and guidelines
· Provided assistance with moving a person in at least 6 of the following situations:
o assisting a person up off the floor
o assisting a person to be weighed on chair weighing scales
o assisting a person to change position in bed
o assisting a person to use crutches or other walking aids
o assisting a person or co-worker to use a hoist or mechanical lifter for transfers
o moving a person to a seated position
o moving a person by wheelchair or trolley
o moving a person between wheelchair or trolley and bed
o moving a person to a standing position
o transfers from wheelchair to shower chair and toilet
o assisting a person who is falling
