COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Safety Leadership Essentials course. This program will equip you with the leadership principles, behavioural insights, organisational systems thinking, and cultural strategies required to drive safety performance and reduce exposure to hazards across all levels of the organisation. You will explore the meaning of organisational safety models, the role of leadership in shaping safety outcomes, the importance of enabling and sustaining safety systems, and the behavioural, psychological, and structural components that influence safety effectiveness. This course also examines the big five personality framework, leadership styles, organisational change processes, and the methods leaders use to influence safety culture.

This course begins by examining what an organisational safety model means and how safety leadership assures improvement. You will explore how leadership and culture influence the organisation’s safety enabling systems and sustaining systems, and how these systems work together to reduce exposure to hazards at the Working Interface. This section also highlights the primary importance of the Working Interface, the relationship of exposure events to injury events, the necessity of leading indicators, and why safety systems must be enabled—not merely documented—to function effectively. You will also explore the importance of sustaining safety systems to ensure long-term, reliable performance.

The next learning area focuses on leadership behaviours and cultural impact. You will explore how leadership creates organisational culture and safety climate, what motivates leaders to improve safety, and what influences the behaviour of safety leaders. This section examines how to sustain organisational change, the two critical elements required for successful sustainability, and the mechanisms and processes used to create organisational change. You will also explore why serious employee engagement is essential during change initiatives and how leaders foster participation at all levels.

A further learning area examines the safety leadership model and the personal attributes of effective safety leaders. You will explore the personality, values, and emotional commitment that safety leaders must possess to influence behaviours and systems. This section examines the measurement of the big five personality traits, the applications of big five research to safety leadership, and how leaders use these findings to improve their safety effectiveness. You will explore how the big five model supports self-awareness, identifies leadership strengths, and informs developmental strategies.

Another learning area focuses on leadership styles and safety outcomes. You will explore the differences between transactional leadership and transformational leadership and how each style influences safety behaviour and organisational climate. This section examines the activities associated with transactional safety leaders, the activities associated with transformational safety leaders, and the characteristics of the cultivating leadership style, which blends relationship-building, coaching, and developmental support. You will also explore how transformational leadership style is typically measured using a 360-degree diagnostic instrument to capture feedback from multiple perspectives.

The final learning area highlights how effective safety leadership integrates personality, values, systems thinking, cultural influence, and structured safety processes to create safer workplaces. You will explore how safety leaders align strategy with behaviour, use leading indicators to improve safety performance, foster engagement, and sustain organisational change that enhances long-term safety outcomes.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand organisational safety models, strengthen safety leadership behaviours, support robust safety systems, use the big five framework for leadership development, apply transactional and transformational leadership activities appropriately, lead organisational change, enhance safety culture, and contribute to reducing exposure and injuries across the Working Interface.
