COURSE OVERVIEW:

A hazard is a situation or thing that has the potential to harm a person.

The WHS legislation requires persons who conduct a business or undertaking (PCBUs) to manage all work health and safety risks, so that the health and safety of workers and other people are not affected by an organisation's conduct.

Hazard Identification is the process of examining each work area and work task for the purpose of identifying all the hazards which are “inherent in the job”. The goal of hazard identification is to find and record possible hazards that may be present in your workplace.

Some hazards may be more obvious than others because they are common and well known in a particular industry. Others may be more difficult to identify. It is important to work closely with workers and look at every task in the workplace to help identify all potential hazards. If someone has been injured during a particular task, then a hazard exists that could hurt someone else. Workplace incidents need to be investigated to identify any hazards involved and to control the corresponding risks.

Hazard identification does not end with the initial investigation. Hazard identification should be regarded as an ongoing, integral part of workplace operations. In general, the legal requirement is for hazard identification to be undertaken: before and during the introduction of new work systems, plant and chemicals to the workplace, before and during alterations or changes to the use or location of work systems, plant and chemicals and where new information on hazards or control measures becomes available.

Identifying hazards protects workers from workplace hazards; help avoid injuries, illnesses, and incidents; minimise or eliminate safety and health risks; and help employers provide workers with safe and healthful working conditions.

This course takes a straightforward practical approach to identifying, organising, and controlling the health and safety hazards in the business. In addition, we will be looking at some of the obvious risks that may exist in each of your organisation’s areas.
