COURSE OVERVIEW:
Workplace bullying is repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards an employee or group of employees, that creates a risk to health and safety.
The emphasis here is on 'repeated', meaning that a single incident of unreasonable behaviour is not considered bullying. It's still important to deal with what might look like one-off issues, however, as these have the potential to escalate. The 'risk to health and safety' is also important - in this context, we're talking about the effect bullying has on someone's mental health.
Bullying can happen in any type of workplace, and to people in any type of role - from front-line employees through to CEOs. It can also take lots of different forms, from verbal or physical abuse through to online harassment. In some cases, workplace bullying extends beyond the working environment - for example, through emails or texts sent outside work hours.
Bullying may also be discrimination if it is because of your age, sex, pregnancy, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or certain other reasons. Sexual harassment and racial hatred are also against the law.
The first part of this course examines your experiences of bullying in the workplace. It will then define what ‘workplace bullying’ is and highlight the intentions of people who use bullying behaviour at work. It will move on to identify a range of behaviours that bullies often employ when bullying their colleagues.
The second part focuses on the challenges that faces you when one of your team members might be consistently using bullying behaviour, and realise that the task of confronting their behaviour falls to you. It highlights how to go about this responsibility effectively so that you stand a good chance of influencing your team member to cease using bullying behaviour.
