COURSE OVERVIEW:
Just as there are many approaches to workplace training and delivery, adults respond to training in different ways for different reasons. People vary generationally in the way they absorb and process information, and they also vary in naturally predisposed learning styles.
Efficiency demands that training satisfy each of these more or less equally, but actually designing it to this effect can be a nightmare mess of conflicting elements that inclines many to ignore these distinctions altogether.
In most workplace environments, some form of training usually takes place. This training comes in different forms, ranging from hands-on experience to reading procedural manuals to viewing online media for information. Just as workplaces have a range of diverse employees, these individuals have diverse learning styles.
Individuals learn from performing a task, while others learn simply by picking up a manual and studying it. Maintaining the best learning environment in the workplace involves knowing the different types of learning and the best approach for each learner. Adults learners respond to training in different ways for different reasons.
Even if you have never done any formal training or teaching, you have already developed a training style, a combination of training philosophies, methods, and behaviours, as the result of the experiences you have had as a learner and as an unofficial trainer. The way in which you give directions to others (co-workers, friends, family members), present information, or explain how to do something reflects a preferred training style.
In this course you will have an opportunity to learn about workplace training styles and your own personal training style.
The course starts by examining the different learning styles, then helps you identify your own training-style preference. Furthermore, we identify ways to increase your style flexibility. Also, we distinguish between learner-centred and information-centred training. Finally, we help you define your own role in the success of the training experience and then show you how to address the different learning styles in your workplace training.
