COURSE OVERVIEW:
Body language is of utmost importance in this highly competitive world. The corporate sector values good body language a lot and any sign of bad body language can break deals, even leading to loss of network for people. It has been suggested that body language may account for between 60 to 65% of all communication.
Positive body language is a must in workplaces and corporate environment. Healthy body language can help foster team spirit in the workplace, and can also boost the morale of the employees. Delegation of responsibilities becomes easier through positive body language. It can also help in conveying respect for colleagues and resolving conflicts in the organisation.
While the key to success in both personal and professional relationships lies in your ability to communicate well, it’s not the words that you use but your nonverbal cues or “body language” that speak the loudest. Body language is the use of physical behaviour, expressions, and mannerisms to communicate nonverbally, often done instinctively rather than consciously.
When you interact with others, you’re continuously giving and receiving wordless signals. All of your nonverbal behaviours—the gestures you make, your posture, your tone of voice, how much eye contact you make—send strong messages. They can put people at ease, build trust, and draw others towards you, or they can offend, confuse, and undermine what you’re trying to convey. These messages don’t stop when you stop speaking either. Even when you’re silent, you’re still communicating nonverbally.
Confident body language can change the way people perceive you and help you succeed in life. What is confident body language, and how does it compare to body language that doesn't show confidence? Becoming fluent in this kind of language can help you read others better and have more control over the image of yourself that you present.
This course consists of six sections. It explains in detail at some of the important skills and techniques needed to become a confident body language communicator, and offers an integrated approach to achieving this.
Section 1 considers the importance of eye contact. A potent form of non-verbal communication, eye contact can be spell-binding, intimidating, informative and central to the making and breaking of relationships.
Section 2 deals with facial expressions. The smile is one of the few universals in body language, as is the 'eyebrow flash' of recognition and greeting.
Section 3 examines head talk - the way in which we use our heads to communicate non-verbally. The role of head movements in social interaction is explained and their importance when listening to others is discussed.
Section 4 shows how gestures and body movements are a language in themselves. Cultural differences in gesture use are also discussed.
Section 5 examines the role of posture in body language. And how posture is seen as a key conveyor of non-verbal signals about our state of mind during communication.
Section 6 examines our use of signals and words and looks at how non-verbal aspects of speech back up, extend and illustrate what we are saying.
