COURSE OVERVIEW
The similarities among projects over time show us how the natural phases of a project move through progressive elaboration of the outcome using one or many projects to implement a single concept or need. What makes projects unique and temporary also makes them unsuited to standard methods of operating management. They require autonomy and flexibility to manage all the unknowns and clear definitions and direction to produce a result that not only has immediate value to customers and users but also has enduring value to society.
In previous years, broadening the use of projects meant outsourcing to organisations experienced at delivering results through successful projects. Today the proliferation of internal small projects or even internal large projects has blended and obscured the boundaries between projects and operations. While they may appear to be the same, they are distinct.
The project management concepts in this course are useful for people who are engaged in implementing projects, as well as those who only interact with them from the outside.
This course provides an overview of the role projects have played in the world, identifying the fundamental elements shared by projects throughout history. It defines the project life cycle, the product life cycle, and the process of project design that integrates and aligns the two into one or more projects. The triple constraint is introduced as important in defining and managing projects. How project management evolved helps to explain how it is applied in different settings today and why those differences developed.
And while the standard life cycle for projects applies uniformly across industries, the levels and types of detail that must be developed on projects varies by industry and by the size and complexity of the individual project. This course proposes that general project management approaches be tailored based on the types of projects being managed.
