COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Address Adult LLN Skills in Vocational Education course. This program is designed for trainers, assessors, and vocational professionals who play a pivotal role in supporting the language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) development of adult learners. LLN skills are essential for participation in vocational training, successful workplace performance, and lifelong learning. This course will provide you with the knowledge, tools and strategies needed to effectively identify, address and support adult LLN needs in line with national frameworks and regulatory requirements.
The course begins by defining LLN and its significance in the vocational education and training (VET) context. You will explore why LLN must be embedded in training and assessment, and understand the critical role of the trainer in identifying LLN requirements, customising delivery, and providing appropriate support. We will also examine the five core skills of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF)—learning, reading, writing, oral communication, and numeracy—and how to apply this framework to determine LLN levels and learner needs.
You will learn how to identify the LLN demands of a training program by analysing training package components and recognising trigger words within units of competency. You will also explore how to assess workplace LLN demands to ensure training outcomes align with vocational expectations. The course provides methods to determine learners’ LLN levels, including the use of validated LLN assessment tools, and guidance on recognising behaviours that may indicate LLN challenges.
A strong focus is placed on addressing the LLN needs of adult learners. You will explore the factors that influence adult LLN skills, how to customise training and assessment materials accordingly, and how to design inclusive and supportive learning environments. This includes strategies to adjust tasks, provide differentiated support, and ensure learning is accessible, engaging, and tailored to individual needs.
You will also examine legal and regulatory requirements for RTOs related to LLN, including the responsibility to provide reasonable adjustments and ensure learners are not disadvantaged. The course covers the use of individual learning plans, referral pathways to specialist LLN support, and how to develop, implement, and evaluate targeted learning strategies.
By the end of this course, you will be equipped to address adult LLN skills in a structured, responsive, and compliant manner. You will have the tools to assess LLN requirements in training specifications, determine learner needs, adjust resources, and embed support strategies to promote learner success and workplace readiness across all levels of vocational education and training.
