COURSE OVERVIEW:

Vision is one of the body’s five senses. Together with smell, sound, touch, and taste, vision allows us to understand the world around us. Of all the senses, vision is the one people rely on the most. Still, we often take vision for granted, and we do not realise how remarkable and important it is.

The human eye is like a camera that collects, focuses, and transmits light through a lens to create an image of its surroundings. In a camera, the image is created on film or an image sensor. In the eye, the image is created on the retina, a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

Many people have some sort of problem with their vision. Often, these problems occur because the eye is shaped a little differently than it should be. The eye is either too short or too long, which makes objects appear blurry. This is easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Other times a disease may cause damage to the eye. Aging can also lead to vision problems. Brain damage can influence vision, too. Certain vision problems are inherited from a parent, so they are present at birth. Even a person’s diet can affect his or her vision.

A vision disorder is an impairment of the sense of vision. Vision disorder is not the same as an eye disease. Although many vision disorders do have their immediate cause in the eye, there are many other causes that may occur at other locations in the optic pathway.

Many people have some type of visual problem at some point in their lives. Some can no longer see objects far away. Others have problems reading small print. These types of conditions are often easily treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses.

But when one or more parts of the eye or brain that are needed to process images become diseased or damaged, severe or total loss of vision can occur. In these cases, vision can't be fully restored with medical treatment, surgery, or corrective lenses like glasses or contacts.

This course starts by discussing what vision disorders are. Also, discusses the history of vision disorders and remedies. Then explains how to diagnose, treat, and cope with vision disorders. Finally, discusses how to communicate effectively with people with vision disorders and the Do’s and Don’ts when meeting and interacting with people with vision disorders.
