COURSE OVERVIEW:
Learning can be tough, stressful and draining. But done in the right way, learning can also be fun, rewarding and extremely beneficial.
During your lifetime of learning and study you will have to; learn, interpret, condense and recall huge amounts of information. Clearly the specific skill, tool or technique you will use will be determined by; your preferred learning method, topic of study, environment and the time frame you have available.
Good study skills can increase your confidence, competence, and self-esteem. They can also reduce anxiety about tests and deadlines. By developing effective study skills, you may be able to cut down on the numbers of hours spend studying, leaving more time for other things in your life.
Study skills are an array of skills which tackle the process of organising and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information; effective reading; concentration techniques; and efficient note taking.
Study skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They must, therefore, be distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study (e.g. music or technology), and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence or learning styles.
More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study, retain and recall information which assists in and passing exams can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and motivational techniques.
Learning is a lifelong process that doesn’t end after graduating from school or university. As you progress through this journey called “life,” you acquire new knowledge from multiple sources. Learning has many benefits but the biggest benefit of all is its ability to make you a well-rounded individual.
This course will give you the essential skills, tools, techniques, knowledge and insight to learn, study and recall that information in a way that suits your style. This course is suitable for anyone studying or learning. Or anyone who teaches or instructs others.
The first part of this course starts by discussing why study skills are important. Then examines the different types and reasons of study and the ways to improve learning skills. Then explains how people learn through a mixture of: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic styles. Also, explains the differences and specifics of Acrostics, Acronyms, Analogies and Mnemonics. Then examines the different ways to read. Finally, looks at the condensing, summarising and cue methods.
The second part starts by discussing how to take notes at class and how to study from books. Then looks at a prioritisation method to prioritise what you study. Then examines the visual and auditory techniques. Then explains how to condense large amounts of info and shows ways of studying and remembering information. Also, explains how to ensure you don’t miss anything out and how to break down and answer questions. Then concludes with a general study strategy, which is easy to remember and execute.
