COURSE OVERVIEW:

Training is often seen as something that is work-related – on-job training, off-job training, or employment training schemes. In many cases it is perceived as being a formal process, i.e. with a trainer in a training room, often supported by materials such as a delegate guide. The underpinning principles of how people learn, learning styles, listening, questioning and giving feedback apply to training as well as teaching, lecturing, coaching and assessing. There is normally an expectation that the training will have an aim and objectives, structured contents and evaluation.

Nearly everyone recognises the value and benefits of workforce training. When done properly, training can make workers more efficient — increasing production, revenue, and profits while decreasing costs, waste, and inefficiencies. Effective training can lead to increased compliance with regulations. It can even lead to a happier, more satisfied and engaged workforce, which in turn reduces turnover and costly new employee onboarding. So the benefits are many.

But creating effective training isn’t easy. Some common problems include creating training that doesn’t support a true business goal, or that’s intended to solve a problem that training can’t fix, or without first identifying the true purpose of the training, or that includes too much information. Or maybe all of those things.

Having designed the training, it is important to deliver it effectively. If you are regularly delivering training, you will be aware of many of the points that make for effective delivery; however, if you are new to training you should prepare very carefully. No trainer should attempt to run a formal training session without being trained themselves. Most companies run train-the-trainer programs for their internal trainers, or there are external providers.

Your style of delivery will very much depend on the type of event you are planning. As a trainer you will be performing a number of roles: direct training, one-to-one coaching, facilitating and/or presenting at a conference. However, there are important underpinning skills that every trainer needs in order to be successful.

This course is designed to highlight the key stages of designing and delivering learning and development that is dynamic, positive and challenging.

The first part of this course, Developing a Training Program, begins by discussing the initial idea of training program design. Then explains how to identify client needs. Also, how to link training to business objectives. Finally, discusses how to develop a learning solution and how to produce training materials.

The second part, Delivering Training, starts by discussing the different methods of delivery. Then explains how to co-tutor a training event and the train-the-trainer program. Then discusses the other training communities. Also, explains when and how to use external speakers. Finally, discusses how to organise training venues and how to deal with the unexpected before, during and after delivery.
