COURSE OVERVIEW:
The vision, mission, and values statements provide direction for everything that happens in an organisation. They keep everyone focused on where the organisation is going and what it is trying to achieve. And they define the core values of the organisation and how people are expected to behave. They are not intended to be a straitjacket that restricts or inhibits initiative and innovation, but they are intended to guide decisions and behaviours to achieve common ends.
A vision is a clear, comprehensive ‘photograph’ of an organisation at some point in the future. It provides direction because it describes what the organisation needs to be like, to be successful within the future. A vision describes the WHAT. i.e. what you are trying to achieve in the future. It is the end result of a strategic planning process.
The most common initial act in establishing organisational direction is determining an organisational mission. Organisational mission is the purpose for which the organisation exists. An organisation mission is very important to an organisation because it helps management increase the probability that the organisation will be successful.
Organisational values describe the HOW. i.e. how will we behave towards one another, and towards our stakeholders in the way in which we achieve our goals. Values are the starting point of any cultural change programme. Values explain what is important in people's or organisations lives.
The process of clarifying values, mission and vision is both a personal and organisational task. You don’t have to wait for the leadership of your company to begin this process. Answer for yourself: What do I want to be? What are my capabilities to do this? and What do I want to be known for? There is no better time than now to start.
The objectives of this course have been developed to guide you to the core issues covered in this course.
