COURSE OVERVIEW:
Competencies denote the skills and behaviours needed to demonstrate mastery of a skill at a particular level. In order to provide quality training and education programs, trainers require skills in delivering, assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating training programs. In addition to excellent communication skills, competency models reflect skills that enable trainers to create training, delegate work, set goals, coach performance and handle performance issues.
Competencies are based on what a person does; they are behavioural and observable. If one is competent, then the result is effective or possibly outstanding job performance. A set of competencies is referred to as a competency model and is a collection of behaviours supported by underlying knowledge, skills, and attitudes that relate to a specific role or job responsibility. Building a competency model requires identifying a successful performance for a role or job responsibility and then defining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that relate to that performance. Building a model is a collaborative process by all stakeholders.
Competency models can and do vary from one organisation to another, since success is most often defined in terms of meeting a business need. Business needs differ, so competency models differ. Common themes can be found in similar roles, regardless of the industry or business need. Training and development competencies across industries and businesses also vary due to differing business needs and the organisation’s purpose. When considering a competency model in a specific organisation, it is helpful to look at the broadest variety of behaviours, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to create your own model.
Trainers present information and direct structured learning experiences so individuals increase their knowledge or skills. They also facilitate learning and develop others by using coaching techniques. They prepare for instruction by reviewing course material and making adjustments to fit the expected target population. Trainers can use a variety of delivery modes, from one-on-one training and performance coaching to a physical classroom or distance learning in a virtual classroom.
The skilled trainer is comfortable using a variety of training methods. Trainers can act as facilitators at staff meetings, at management retreats, or in other situations that require facilitation skills. Trainers also have responsibilities outside the classroom, such as promoting the transfer of learning to the job and making recommendations to course designers regarding course modifications.
This course will help workplace trainers identify the basic and advanced competencies for their important role in the training function.
This course begins by defining competency then discusses how competencies are built from knowledge and skill. Then explains how to measure training competencies and the steps to set up a competency assessment process. Then examines the expanded competency checklist for trainers and explains how to use the competency checklists. Also, examines the competency model checklist for trainers. Then discusses the 16 competencies required of a trainer including the basic and advanced competencies. Finally, shows how to create a trainer development plan.
