COURSE OVERVIEW:

Human resource management (HRM or HR) is the strategic approach to the effective management of people in a company or organisation such that they help their business gain a competitive advantage. It is designed to maximise employee performance in service of an employer's strategic objectives.

The practice of human resource management (HRM) is concerned with all aspects of how people are employed and managed in organisations. It covers activities such as strategic HRM, human capital management, corporate social responsibility, knowledge management, organisation development, resourcing (human resource planning, recruitment and selection, and talent management), performance management, learning and development, reward management, employee relations, employee well-being and health and safety and the provision of employee services.

HRM practice has a strong conceptual basis drawn from the behavioural sciences and from strategic management, human capital and industrial relations theories. This foundation has been built with the help of a multitude of research projects.

HR also concerns itself with organisational change and industrial relations, or the balancing of organisational practices with requirements arising from collective bargaining and governmental laws.

The overall purpose of human resources (HR) is to ensure that the organisation is able to achieve success through people. HR professionals manage the human capital of an organisation and focus on implementing policies and processes. They can specialise in finding, recruiting, training, and developing employees, as well as maintaining employee relations or benefits. Training and development professionals ensure that employees are trained and have continuous development. This is done through training programs, performance evaluations, and reward programs.

Employee relations deals with the concerns of employees when policies are broken, such as cases involving harassment or discrimination. Managing employee benefits includes developing compensation structures, parental leave programs, discounts, and other benefits for employees. On the other side of the field are HR generalists or business partners. These HR professionals could work in all areas or be labour relations representatives working with unionised employees.

The aim of this course is to provide a general introduction to the HRM practice and the underpinning concepts of HRM.

This course covers the definition of HRM, the objectives of HRM, HRM theory, the characteristics of HRM, the components of HRM systems, the development of HRM as an approach to managing people, the context within which HRM functions, and the ethical dimensions that affect HR policy and practice.
