COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Information Systems & Knowledge Management course. This program will equip you with the concepts, analytical skills, and practical approaches needed to understand how information is created, managed, communicated, and transformed into organisational knowledge. You will explore how information systems support decision-making, how knowledge is shared across teams and organisations, and how effective knowledge management contributes to learning, innovation, productivity, and long-term sustainability.

This course begins by examining the differences between data, information, and knowledge, and how each plays a distinct role in organisational functioning. You will explore the various forms of information, identify and evaluate the sources of information you use, and assess whether information flows effectively within your team. This section also examines how the Internet is used as an information source, the characteristics of information needed for management decisions, and how to identify information overload and understand why it occurs. You will also explore how to evaluate the information you receive by assessing its quality and value, and learn how to reduce information overload through structured filtering, prioritisation, and communication techniques. This section concludes with an exploration of the features of clear written communication, how to evaluate your writing style, how to plan an effective presentation, and how to develop notes and visual aids that strengthen delivery and understanding.

The next learning area focuses on information systems and organisational processes. You will explore the key stages in the system development life cycle and the contributions you may be required to make throughout the process. This section also introduces Anthony’s pyramid model and its influence on management thinking by showing how information needs differ across operational, tactical, and strategic levels. You will explore the components of an information systems disaster menu, the contrasts between the Internet, intranet, and extranet, and the benefits of a corporate intranet for communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. You will also explore the methods of data security, how well your organisation manages data security, and the safeguards needed to protect sensitive information against threats, breaches, and misuse.

A further part of the program examines the foundations of knowledge management. You will explore the definition of knowledge management and its relationship to learning processes, followed by the dynamic relationship between information and knowledge and how organisations convert information into value. This section also addresses the barriers to knowledge management, the critical success factors that support successful implementation, and the structured steps—known as the 12 steps to knowledge mobilisation—that help embed knowledge practices into organisational culture. You will explore practical ways to mobilise knowledge management in your organisation through improved communication systems, learning structures, leadership behaviours, and collaborative technologies.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand how information and knowledge operate within organisations, evaluate information quality, manage information flows effectively, contribute to system development processes, support data security, apply knowledge-management principles, and facilitate the mobilisation of knowledge to strengthen organisational learning and long-term performance.
