COURSE OVERVIEW:

In Section A, participants will delve into the legal and ethical considerations essential for providing home and community services. This includes understanding codes of practice, basic home fire safety, dignity of risk, duty of care, privacy, confidentiality, and disclosure, practice standards, work role boundaries, and work health and safety. Participants will also learn about relevant organisation policies and procedures, personal and property security procedures, relevant policies and programs, implications for work in the sector, and indicators of abuse and neglect. This foundational knowledge ensures that participants are equipped to navigate the complex ethical and legal landscape while delivering care and support.

In Section B, participants will develop practical skills for delivering home and community support services effectively. This includes reading and interpreting individual plans and goals, confirming required equipment and processes, preparing for visits, and following organisational procedures to assure the person of their identity before entering the house.

Participants will also learn effective communication strategies, hazard identification and risk management, negotiation skills, compliance with duty of care requirements, maintaining confidentiality, reporting observations to supervisors, and completing documentation accurately and efficiently.

Moreover, participants will learn to deal with ethical dilemmas, behaviours of concern, and possible abuse or neglect, ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals receiving care.

In addition, participants will learn how to provide services to individuals in different home or community support settings. They will learn how to use appropriate interpersonal skills to establish positive relationships with individuals, seek clarification of tasks, interpret and follow instructions, and ensure the delivery of person-centred care and support.

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the expertise and professionalism necessary to provide exceptional home and community support services, respecting the dignity, autonomy, and rights of individuals while ensuring their safety, well-being, and quality of life.

Section B: Performance Tasks

·       Read and interpret individual plan, goals and confirm required equipment, processes and aids

·       Confirm purpose and time of visit with the relevant person

·       Prepare equipment, resources and/or documents required for the purpose of the visit and contingencies

·       Follow organisation’s procedures to assure the person of your identity before entering the house

·       Communicate with the person to provide information, clarify purpose of visit and confirm the person’s consent

·       Provide opportunity for the person to identify and express any issues or concerns in relation to the visit and/or associated matters

·       Engage appropriately with others in the place of residence in accordance with organisation policies

·       Check for hazards to own and others’ health and safety and implement controls to manage risk

·       Negotiate how to best implement the individual plan to suit the person within organisation procedures and respecting that the work setting is the person’s home and personal space

·       Comply with duty of care requirements of role in relation to the person and any other people

·       Demonstrate respect and sensitivity toward the person and their place of residence

·       Deal with ethical dilemmas, behaviours of concern, possible abuse and/or neglect in accordance with relevant policies and procedures

·       Maintain confidentiality in accordance with legislation and organisation policy and procedures

·       Comply with the organisation’s reporting requirements, including reporting observations to supervisor

·       Complete and maintain documentation according to organisation policy and protocols and using technology required in the workplace

·       Ensure any arrangements for follow up visits are recorded and implemented

·       Provide services to individual/s in at least 2 different home or community support settings.

·       Use appropriate inter-personal skills:

o   establishing a positive relationship with the individual

o   seeking clarification of tasks

o   interpreting and following instructions
