COURSE OVERVIEW:

Internal communications are defined as transactions between individuals and groups at various levels and in different areas of specialisation. Furthermore, these transactions are intended to design (and redesign) organisations and coordinate day-to-day activities.

The role of internal communication is not only to pass information, but also to build a system of values, creating an ideology of changes which motivate and educate employees. Effective internal communication may become the key to an increase in employee motivation and involvement, an increase in work efficiency, the success of implemented changes and in building a positive internal and external image of the organisation.

Regardless of the type of organisation, communication is an element that maintains and sustains the relationships within it. What one person says to another person not only can have an impact on those two people but, since organisations are systems, it can also have a meaningful impact on the total system. Communication between managers and employees and the employees themselves in the organisation is a major determinant of how satisfied people are. Organisational communication is central to an organisation’s success.

As a strategic process, internal communication can motivate and empower a company’s employees. If employees do not know what their company’s objectives are and their part in reaching those goals, and if they do not receive feedback about their work, they may lose motivation and interest. The company’s performance may also be negatively affected. Internal communication therefore has a critical role in organisations. Many studies confirm that companies with effective communications strategies are often more successful than those with poor communications.

Although many scholars and practitioners consider internal communication central to the success of a company, an imbalance exists between the perceived importance of communication and the actual attention and resources devoted to it. 

This course shows that an effective internal communication process can yield many positive outcomes both at an individual level and at an organisational level. This purpose of this course is to help both management and employees understand the importance of the internal communication process.

This course starts by defining internal communication. Then discusses how internal communication is considered a component of the internal marketing mix and the relationship between internal communication and organisational communication. Then discusses how internal communication outcomes can be grouped into two categories: individual and organisational. Also, discusses the individual outcomes that include the positive effects that internal communication may have on an employee as an individual. Then examines organisational outcomes that refers to the advantages that internal communication can bring to an organisation as a whole. Finally, explains how organisational outputs can be considered second-level outputs as they exist only as long as the individual outputs occur and how the organisational outputs result from the sum of the individual outputs.
