Public speaking (also called oratory or oration) is the process or act of performing a speech to a live audience. Public speaking is commonly understood as formal, face-to-face speaking of a single person to a group of listeners. Traditionally, public speaking was considered to be a part of the art of persuasion. The act can accomplish particular purposes including to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. Additionally, differing methods, structures, and rules can be utilised according to the speaking situation.

The first part of this course will explain the foundations of public speaking and the evolving aspects of public speaking. Then discusses the communication models that focus primarily on today’s communication environment.
The second part discusses the sources of public speaking anxiety: temperament (communibiology paradigm). Then explores the uncertainties and responses produced in the public speaking context. Then you’ll learn about why you get nervous in public speaking situations, how you can manage that anxiety, and ways to build your confidence.
The third part provides a clear emphasis on the importance of maintaining a communication code of ethics in public speaking. Then provides instructions on what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. Also, discusses ethical speaking and listening and features the HURIER model. Finally, examines listening effectiveness to help you better understand the link between listening skills and evaluating a speaker’s message.
