COURSE OVERVIEW:
The typical workplace is particularly conducive to anger. Here we find complex relationships, chronic pressure, high stakes, and many factors beyond our control. These generate frustration, conflict, and anxiety— common causes of anger. We are all familiar with high-profile cases of workplace violence, and surely a burning issue for managers is figuring out how to prevent extreme outbursts that may result in injury or worse. But the more comprehensive task for managers and business leaders is to understand anger and learn how to handle it in all its workplace manifestations.
When we think about managing anger, we tend to think about controlling people who “over-express” their anger by behaving aggressively. However, an equally important problem is the “under-expression” of anger, when for one reason or another people do not show their anger. Both over- and under-expression lead to significant costs for individuals, teams, and organisations, and both must be dealt with effectively.
The key to managing anger is creating conditions in which anger can be expressed appropriately and productively. This key reflects the underlying assumption of this course: that while anger can produce very damaging results, it is not necessarily a negative emotion. Indeed, anger can be a source of important data that should be recognised, processed, and acted upon. When effectively managed, anger can produce many positive results.
The first part of this course begins by outlining the basic components of anger and explaining the factors that contribute to anger in the workplace. Then discusses the long- and short-term consequences of poorly managed anger and their meaning for individuals, work teams, and organisations.
The second part explores the signs and symptoms of anger along with guidelines for identifying anger and the common anger syndromes that afflict many workplaces. Then outlines the primary sources of workplace anger and offers guidelines for handling them.
The third part provides a five-step intervention process that will help you deal with an angry individual at work. Then focuses on the problem of systemic causes and pervasive anger. Then discusses the elements of organisational culture that contribute to pervasive anger. Finally, a three-step intervention for teams in crisis is provided, also the best practices for organisation-wide anger management is discussed.
