INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Conduct Troubleshooting Processes to Identify Common Automotive Faults course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in applying structured troubleshooting processes to identify common automotive faults safely and accurately, using workplace procedures, appropriate tools, and clear communication and documentation practices.

Conducting troubleshooting in an automotive workplace involves gathering accurate information about a reported issue, identifying which system may be involved, selecting a logical fault-finding approach, and working through checks in a controlled sequence to determine the most likely cause. This work requires disciplined safety awareness because troubleshooting can involve hazards such as moving parts, hot components, electrical risks, fluids, fumes and the potential for accidental damage if checks are performed incorrectly. Effective troubleshooting supports efficient repair decisions, reduces unnecessary part replacement, and ensures that findings are reliable and communicated clearly for the next stage of work.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret customer concerns, apply safe and methodical troubleshooting steps, and recognise the practical requirements for identifying likely fault causes without causing damage to systems or components. You will be required to demonstrate how you determine the nature of the customer enquiry using appropriate questioning techniques, recognise hazards associated with fault identification and apply safety precautions, and research troubleshooting options to select the most appropriate approach for the circumstances.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and process control requirements, including selecting tools and equipment for troubleshooting and checking serviceability in line with manufacturer procedures, identifying the automotive system or component related to the reported fault, and following workplace troubleshooting procedures to identify the likely cause without causing damage. It will also assess your knowledge of seeking information and support as needed to assist fault identification, and applying WHS and OHS requirements including correct PPE selection and use during troubleshooting activities.

You will also be assessed on practical reporting, verification and documentation requirements, including reporting fault identification findings to appropriate persons for action in line with workplace procedures and applying procedures for documenting and reporting findings with clear recording of identified basic faults across relevant vehicle systems. The assessment will examine your ability to use simple diagnostic charts and flowcharts to guide decision-making, conduct a final inspection to ensure work meets workplace expectations and the vehicle or equipment is presented ready for use, and complete post-task requirements such as checking and storing tools and equipment, identifying and tagging faulty electrical equipment, and processing workplace documentation relating to the troubleshooting activity.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret customer concerns, apply safe and structured troubleshooting processes, select and check appropriate tools, identify relevant automotive systems, use basic diagnostic charts and flowcharts to guide fault-finding decisions, communicate and document findings accurately, complete final inspection requirements, and finalise tool handling and workplace documentation—confirming your readiness to support fault identification processes in an automotive workplace.
