INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Locate & Identify Automotive Electrical Systems & Components course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in locating and identifying key automotive electrical systems and components accurately and safely, using appropriate technical information, correct terminology and basic electrical theory.

Locating and identifying automotive electrical systems and components involves understanding how electrical power is generated, stored, distributed and controlled within a vehicle or machinery system, and being able to recognise the major systems and their component roles in basic operation. This work requires careful attention to workplace safety procedures because automotive electrical systems can present risks such as short circuits, sparks, heat, battery hazards and moving engine components during checking activities. Accurate identification of systems and components is essential for effective diagnostics and repair work because technicians must be able to confirm what system they are working on, interpret technical information correctly, and describe circuits and components clearly before any testing or disassembly occurs.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret task instructions, make informed decisions about how to locate and identify systems using technical information, and recognise the safety controls required when working around automotive electrical components. You will be required to demonstrate how you identify task requirements from job instructions, including the specific vehicle or machinery to be worked on, obtain and use technical information to support identification of electrical systems, and apply workplace health and safety requirements throughout identification and checking activities.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of safe work preparation and equipment use, including selecting and using PPE appropriate to automotive electrical system identification tasks, selecting and using tools and equipment safely, and following workplace safety procedures while locating and checking electrical systems and components. It will also assess your knowledge of basic electrical theory concepts that underpin automotive electrical operation, including alternating current and how it relates to vehicle electrical systems, direct current and its relationship to vehicle operation, and Ohm’s law and its practical relevance when confirming basic system operation.

You will also be assessed on your ability to identify and locate the major electrical systems used in automotive applications and explain their basic function and relationships. This includes identifying and locating vehicle electrical power supplies and confirming basic operation, identifying and locating the ignition system and confirming major component function, identifying and locating the fuel delivery system and confirming major component roles, and identifying and locating the charging and starting systems and explaining how they support vehicle operation. The assessment will also examine your understanding of lighting and body electrical systems and how they relate to overall vehicle function, and your ability to identify and locate fuses, circuit breakers, wiring looms and harnesses while using correct automotive electrical terminology to describe components and circuits accurately.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret task requirements, use technical information to locate and identify automotive electrical systems, apply WHS controls and PPE, use tools safely, apply basic electrical theory concepts, and correctly identify key systems such as power supply, ignition, fuel delivery, charging, starting, lighting and body electrical systems, including wiring protection and harness components—confirming your readiness to support accurate electrical system identification in an automotive workplace.
