COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Six Sigma Principles course. This program will equip you with the foundational concepts, analytical tools, project structure, and improvement methodologies required to plan, execute, and sustain Six Sigma initiatives. You will explore how Six Sigma reduces defects, cuts costs, improves process capability, and enhances business outcomes through data-driven decision-making and structured problem solving. This course also examines the DMAIC model in depth, measurement and variation techniques, root-cause identification tools, experimental design, risk assessment, and strategies to institutionalise continuous improvement.
This course begins by examining why Six Sigma is a methodology for improvement and how it helps organisations reduce defects and cut costs. You will explore how to set business metrics, measure processes accurately, and apply Six Sigma to reduce variation in output quality. This section also explains how to measure variation in a process, how to focus on quantifiable results, and the three essentials for starting a Six Sigma initiative: leadership commitment, project selection, and team capability. You will explore how to choose Six Sigma projects carefully, how to plan implementation, and the logic of the DMAIC model.
The next learning area focuses on how to plot and execute a Six Sigma project. You will examine the Define phase, including its key deliverables such as project charters, problem statements, CTQ (critical-to-quality) requirements, and stakeholder identification. You will explore the Measure phase, including its deliverablesโprocess maps, baseline performance data, capability analysis, and measurement-system validation. This section also covers the Analyse phase, where root causes are identified, along with its deliverables such as hypothesis tests, cause-and-effect validation, and refined problem statements. You will explore the Improve phase and its deliverables, including solution development, pilot testing, process optimisation, and risk mitigation. This section concludes with the Control phase, which includes deliverables such as control plans, monitoring systems, standardised procedures, and documentation to ensure improvements are sustained.
A further learning area examines Six Sigma tools and investigative techniques. You will explore tools for opening an investigation and narrowing focus, how to discover patterns, how to examine data, and how to use correlation studies to investigate cause-and-effect relationships. This section also covers the three basic rules for process mapping, the fundamentals of using an XY matrix to connect inputs to outputs, and how to test and measure systems. You will explore how to identify the vital few causes using Pareto-based logic and analytical testing.
Another learning area focuses on advanced analytical techniques. You will explore the three basic steps in conducting a multi-vari study, the steps in hypothesis testing, and how to assess risks using Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). This section examines the stages of an FMEAโidentification of failure modes, scoring severity/occurrence/detection, calculating RPN (Risk Priority Number), and prioritising corrective actions. You will explore how to correct problems through targeted solutions and how Design of Experiments (DOE) works to optimise processes by testing multiple variables simultaneously.
The final learning area focuses on planning for control and sustaining gains. You will explore how to plan for control using structured control plans, how to document monitoring requirements, and how to sustain Six Sigma by embedding process ownership, leadership support, training, and ongoing analytics. This section reinforces how continuous improvement becomes self-perpetuating when Six Sigma principles are integrated into daily operational and strategic decision-making.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand Six Sigma fundamentals, measure and analyse variation, apply DMAIC phases effectively, identify root causes, use analytical tools, design experiments, develop control plans, conduct FMEA, sustain improvements, and contribute to a culture of data-driven operational excellence.
