COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Strategies for Effective Training course. This program has been designed to equip you with the knowledge and capability required to deliver high-quality, engaging and impactful training experiences that support learning, performance and organisational development. You will explore the nature of training, the role and expectations of trainers, how adults learn, how to design structured and motivating learning experiences and how to use tools, techniques and resources that strengthen learner engagement and skill acquisition.

This course begins by examining the importance of being an effective trainer, what training is and who qualifies as a trainer. You will explore how training functions as an educational activity, the distinctions between school or university education and workplace training and the fundamental differences between the role of a professor and the role of a trainer. This learning area also addresses the basic expectations organisations hold toward professional trainers, the meaning of teaching skills, what makes training useful and why training needs to be innovative in modern learning environments. You will also consider how to measure innovation in training and how the indicator of training success — IMPACT — determines whether training has achieved meaningful behavioural change.

The next learning area focuses on how people learn. You will explore the definition of learning, the steps of the learning process, the differences between short-term memory and long-term memory and how memory can be strengthened in the learning process. This section also addresses two common learning-related misconceptions and clarifies how understanding the science of learning enables trainers to design more effective and efficient learning interventions.

The next learning area examines the strategies required for effective training. You will analyse how to develop clear learning objectives, apply useful golden rules for structuring objectives, use the KSA model to define knowledge, skills and attitudes, stimulate all types of intelligences and create a safe and pleasant training environment. This section also explains the rules of communication, behaviour and confidentiality and the golden rules of designing and delivering effective icebreakers that support learner engagement from the start.

The next learning area explores how to boost motivation and think in structure. You will review the core messages of training, the difference between standard learning material and additional learning material and how to structure a training program that naturally enhances learning. This section also explains how to make participants learn by doing, the golden rules that make experiential exercises effective and the benefits of using case studies — along with simple rules that ensure case studies are engaging, realistic and instructionally valuable.

The next learning area focuses on innovative visual support and the effective use of slides. You will explore the rules for using slides to enhance training effectiveness, why slides should be used only when they add real value and why slides exist for trainees rather than for trainers. This section also explains why slides should be focused, limited, structured, interesting and visually attractive to support cognitive processing and learner engagement.

The next learning area addresses the importance of reinforcement and training take-aways. You will examine why and how core messages should be repeated multiple times throughout the training experience and how trainers can provide meaningful take-away items or resources that reinforce learning, encourage ongoing application and support long-term retention.

By the end of this course you will understand how to design, structure and deliver training that is purposeful, innovative, motivating and instructionally effective, enabling you to strengthen learner engagement, improve performance outcomes and support organisational learning and development.
