INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Fix & Install Electrotechnology Equipment course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in fixing, mounting and securing electrotechnology equipment safely and accurately, including selecting suitable fixings and support accessories, applying isolation and WHS controls, and completing installation and finalisation requirements in accordance with workplace procedures and technical expectations.

Fixing and installing electrotechnology equipment involves mounting equipment and associated accessories to a range of substrates so the installation remains secure, correctly aligned and protected from damage during service. This work requires disciplined planning and safety management because tasks may involve hazardous work environments, portable power tools, drilling into walls and structural materials, potential contact with services, and exposure to conductive parts or plant and machinery. Effective fixing and installation practices are critical to preventing equipment failure, damage to cabling and accessories, unsafe load conditions and injury, and they ensure that equipment is positioned and supported in a way that meets job specifications, regulatory requirements and industry technical standards.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply fixing and mounting requirements, make informed judgements about hazard controls, isolation and fixing selection, and recognise the practical steps required to install equipment securely across common construction substrates. You will be required to demonstrate how you apply WHS and workplace procedures to the work area, identify hazards and assess risks, implement appropriate control measures, and obtain and confirm the scope of work from documentation and or a work supervisor. You will also be required to demonstrate how you coordinate work with others to ensure tasks are sequenced and integrated safely.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation, materials and equipment selection requirements, including identifying and obtaining required materials in line with workplace procedures, selecting fixing devices based on environment, substrate type and safe load limits with reference to manufacturer specifications, and selecting support accessories and protective equipment to support and protect equipment, wiring, cabling and piping from damage. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting and checking tools, equipment and testing devices for correct operation and safe use, including safe use of hand tools and portable power tools.

You will also be assessed on installation and verification requirements, including confirming exposed or conductive parts, plant or machinery are isolated in consultation with an authorised person before work proceeds, and installing fixing devices to industry requirements across common substrates such as hollow walls, solid walls including brick, masonry and concrete, and steel or metal fixings. The assessment will examine your ability to install, align and adjust fixings and support accessories accurately to job specifications, regulatory requirements and industry technical standards, and apply fixing selection and installation methods for different load ranges including less than 5 kg, 5–20 kg and 20–50 kg, including installing a fixing device and accessory capable of supporting up to 20 kg on a metal plate. It will also confirm your understanding of using fixing adhesives and tapes safely and correctly to manufacturer instructions and load limits, and using power drills safely by selecting appropriate drill bits and speeds while preventing damage to apparatus, circuits, surrounding services and the environment, including applying sustainable energy practices.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for fixing and installing electrotechnology equipment, including applying WHS and risk controls, confirming job scope and coordinating tasks, selecting compliant fixings and support accessories for different environments and load ranges, checking and using tools safely, confirming isolation of conductive parts and plant, installing and aligning fixings across common substrates, using adhesives and drilling methods correctly, and completing finalisation requirements such as documentation, housekeeping, secure tool storage and completion notifications—confirming your readiness to install and secure electrotechnology equipment safely and to specification.
