INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Install Timber & Steel Flooring Systems course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, setting out, installing and completing timber and steel flooring systems safely and accurately in accordance with drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements and workplace procedures.

Installing timber and steel flooring systems involves constructing the structural floor framework and fixing flooring materials so the completed platform is level, square, stable and fit for purpose. This work requires careful interpretation of work instructions and set-out information, selection of suitable materials and fixings, and disciplined application of compliance requirements such as NCC, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental obligations. Accurate flooring installation is essential because errors in support structure alignment, bearer and joist placement, trimmer installation, or flooring fixing can cause uneven floors, movement and noise, poor load distribution, premature failure, moisture-related damage, and costly rework once subsequent construction stages begin.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply flooring installation requirements, make informed judgements about safety controls, sequencing and installation accuracy, and recognise the practical steps required to install flooring systems under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you read and interpret work instructions, drawings and specifications, plan the sequence of flooring work, and plan tasks to comply with laws and regulations, NCC requirements, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements, manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and risk control requirements, including selecting the correct tools and equipment for flooring installation, completing serviceability checks and reporting faults, selecting and using PPE appropriate to each stage of work, and inspecting the work site to locate services, assess hazards and apply risk controls such as signage and barricades. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting flooring system materials, calculating quantities to minimise waste, handling materials safely, and preparing and positioning materials for efficient installation.

You will also be assessed on practical set-out, installation and structural detailing requirements, including positioning and installing support structures such as posts, stumps and piers to set-out lines and specifications and checking level, plumb and square. The assessment will examine your understanding of bearer installation processes, including marking and cutting bearers for joining over supports and fixing bearers to achieve square, in-line and level outcomes, as well as installing damp proof course and termite barrier arrangements where specified. It will also confirm your capability to install waling plates for decks and balconies to external walls, set out floor joist locations to required spacings, check joists for straightness, fix joists to line and level, and install supporting blocks and trimmers around doorways and openings to maintain structural support and compliance. The assessment will further evaluate your ability to cut, fit and fix trimmers to support sheet flooring joints and meet platform system requirements, and install flooring materials including sheet platforms, strip or tongue-and-groove flooring and wet-area systems using suitability checks, accurate measuring and cutting, and fixing methods that align with manufacturer specifications.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for installing timber and steel flooring systems, including planning and compliance, selecting and checking tools, applying PPE and hazard controls, preparing and positioning materials, installing and checking support structures, bearers, joists, blocks and trimmers, fixing flooring materials accurately to specification, and completing clean-up, waste handling and tool maintenance—confirming your readiness to install flooring systems safely and effectively in construction work activities.
