INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Perform General Demolition Work of Minor Building Structures course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing and carrying out general demolition and deconstruction of minor building structures safely, while meeting jurisdictional requirements, WHS obligations, environmental controls and workplace procedures.

Performing general demolition work of minor building structures involves the controlled removal of external and internal building components so that structures can be dismantled without causing unintended collapse, damage to retained areas, injury to workers or the public, or unlawful environmental impact. This work requires careful review of plans, schedules and specifications, assessment of structural conditions and load-bearing considerations, confirmation of local permit and regulatory obligations, and disciplined management of hazards such as falling materials, sharp edges, dust, noise, vibration and potential contact with live services. Effective demolition practice is critical to maintaining site safety, ensuring compliance, supporting safe salvage and reuse where required, and ensuring the work area is restored to a safe and manageable condition after demolition activities.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply demolition requirements, make informed judgements about risk controls, sequencing and structural considerations, and recognise the practical steps required to demolish minor building structures using safe and compliant methods. You will be required to demonstrate how you review and clarify demolition task scope from schedules, plans and specifications, assess the structure to confirm the extent of demolition required including load-bearing considerations, and confirm jurisdictional requirements such as permits and local regulatory obligations relevant to minor building demolition.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of safety preparation and control requirements, including applying WHS requirements through safety plans and policies such as JSA, SWMS, SDS and safety manuals, identifying, managing and documenting risks, and determining the status of existing services before demolition work begins. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting and implementing safety signage and barricades to control the demolition area, and reviewing and applying environmental requirements including noise, dust, vibration, clean-up protection and waste management controls to minimise harm to people, property and the surrounding environment.

You will also be assessed on practical demolition execution and completion requirements, including selecting appropriate plant, tools and equipment, completing serviceability checks and rectifying or reporting faults, and undertaking preparatory work such as site set-up, access control and protecting remaining structures. The assessment will examine your understanding of applying safe demolition and deconstruction techniques suitable for minor building structures, demolishing external components such as walls, cladding, decks, roofs and attached structures, and demolishing internal sections and built-in components such as linings, walling and wet area components. It will also confirm your knowledge of recognising and handling hazardous or sensitive materials for salvage or disposal, including bonded asbestos and other common demolition materials, handling, storing and stacking salvaged materials safely for transport, and completing clean-up and disposal of non-salvageable materials in line with legislation and workplace requirements, including cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for performing general demolition work of minor building structures, including confirming scope and regulatory obligations, assessing structural considerations, applying WHS and environmental controls, selecting and checking equipment, carrying out safe demolition and deconstruction methods for external and internal components, managing hazards and services, handling salvage and waste appropriately, and completing clean-up and equipment maintenance—confirming your readiness to perform minor building demolition tasks safely and effectively within construction environments.
