INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Repair & Renovate Roof Tiles on Different Roof Structures course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and carrying out roof tile repair and renovation work safely and accurately, including removing and replacing damaged tiles, completing re-bedding and re-pointing activities, and restoring roof integrity in accordance with compliance requirements and workplace procedures.
Repairing and renovating roof tiles across different roof structures involves diagnosing and addressing defects in tiled roofing systems so the roof remains weatherproof, structurally sound and visually consistent with the existing installation. This work requires careful interpretation of plans, drawings and specifications, selection of suitable materials and methods, and strict control of work-at-height hazards because roof repair activities can introduce risks such as falls, slipping on fragile or wet surfaces, dislodged tiles, dust exposure and manual handling strain. Effective roof tile repair is critical to preventing water ingress, ongoing deterioration of roof components, and avoidable rework, and it depends on controlled removal methods, correct preparation of substrates and supports, and accurate finishing of bedding and pointing to recognised standards.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply roof tile repair and renovation requirements, make informed judgements about compliance, safety controls and repair methods, and recognise the practical steps required to complete repair work without compromising roof performance. You will be required to demonstrate how you read and interpret plans, drawings, specifications and work instructions, plan the repair and renovation sequence, and apply compliance requirements including NCC and Australian Standards relevant to tile roof repair and renovation work.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of safety and preparation requirements, including applying WHS obligations through SWMS/JSA, SDS and safe work procedures, selecting and using PPE for each stage of repair, renovation, re-bedding and re-pointing, and conducting work site inspections to identify hazards and implement risk controls such as signage, barricades and exclusion zones. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting tools and equipment, completing serviceability checks and reporting faults, and selecting roof tiling materials, calculating quantities, handling materials safely and preparing them ready for use.
You will also be assessed on practical repair and renovation requirements across different roof structures, including locating damaged areas from plans and specifications, confirming the repair scope, and confirming fall safety devices are installed correctly before accessing and working on the roof. The assessment will examine your understanding of removing damaged tiles while minimising disturbance to surrounding tiles and maintaining roof integrity, removing existing bedding and pointing without damaging tiles and clearing loose waste, and inspecting battens, sarking, boarding and flashing to confirm soundness and adequacy before repairing or replacing defective components. It will also confirm your capability to match and blend replacement tiles to the existing roof including alignment with the current layout, and to mix and apply bedding and pointing materials to required standards, including striking and finishing joints and collars so repairs integrate with existing surrounds.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for repairing and renovating roof tiles on different roof structures, including planning work to drawings and specifications, meeting NCC and Australian Standards requirements, applying WHS controls and PPE for roof work, selecting and checking tools and materials, confirming fall safety systems, completing controlled tile removal and replacement, repairing supporting roof components, performing re-bedding and re-pointing to specification, and completing clean-up, waste management and tool maintenance—confirming your readiness to carry out roof tile repair and renovation work safely and effectively.
