INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safe & Accurate Concreting to Simple Forms course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and carrying out concreting work to simple forms in a safe, accurate, and compliant manner, including preparing work areas, placing and finishing concrete to specification, and completing clean-up and equipment maintenance requirements.

Safe and accurate concreting to simple forms involves the coordinated application of work instructions, site safety requirements, materials handling, and practical concreting techniques to produce minor slabs and simple concrete elements that meet required standards of quality, finish, and durability. This includes confirming job requirements, selecting suitable tools and equipment, preparing formwork and substrates, placing reinforcement where required, and applying correct placement, compaction, screeding and finishing processes. Accuracy and safety are critical in concreting because errors in levels, dimensions, curing, reinforcement placement, or finish can lead to structural defects, premature deterioration, drainage issues, rework, and increased risk to workers and others on site.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply concreting concepts and procedures, make sound judgements about site preparation and safe work practices, and recognise the practical requirements involved in completing concreting tasks to simple forms under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you interpret job requirements and confirm specifications with relevant personnel, plan work sequences to suit job scope and site constraints, and conduct site inspections to identify hazards, conditions and access issues that may affect safe and accurate concreting activities.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of core concreting requirements, including applying WHS obligations and site safety controls, selecting appropriate tools and equipment for concreting, completing pre-start checks to confirm serviceability and readiness, and establishing team roles and effective communication to support safe work coordination. It will also assess your knowledge of preparing work areas and formwork, selecting and handling materials, calculating required quantities, and applying processes that ensure concrete is placed and finished in accordance with the required dimensions, tolerances, and nominated finish specifications.

You will also be assessed on practical execution and completion requirements, including preparing substrates, erecting and checking simple forms, positioning reinforcement and spacers where required, placing and managing concrete to achieve specified depth and consistency, and applying appropriate screeding, levelling and finishing techniques to meet job specifications. The assessment will examine your understanding of curing requirements, safe stripping and handling of formwork, and completing clean-up processes including waste management, tool maintenance and safe storage to meet organisational and site requirements.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of safe and accurate concreting to simple forms, including planning and sequencing work, applying WHS controls, selecting and checking equipment, preparing forms and substrates, placing and finishing concrete to specification, and completing curing, clean-up and maintenance processes—confirming your readiness to perform basic concreting tasks reliably within construction site operations.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Reading and interpreting work instructions, drawings and specifications to plan the concreting sequence

2.    Planning work to meet compliance requirements (laws and regulations, NCC, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements)

3.    Selecting tools and equipment for concreting to simple forms, checking serviceability and reporting faults

4.    Selecting and using PPE for each stage of concreting work, aligned to site and task hazards

5.    Inspecting the work site, locating services, assessing hazards and applying risk controls (including signage and barricades)

6.    Selecting concreting materials and components, calculating quantities (including volume of concrete), handling safely and staging materials for use

7.    Preparing the substrate for minor slabs/pathways and other simple forms

8.    Reviewing formwork design from drawings and erecting simple formwork (edge forms/boards, pegs and bracing)

9.    Installing vapour barriers correctly as required for the specified simple form slab or minor work

10. Handling, cutting, positioning and tying reinforcing components (reinforcing bars and fabric sheet mesh)

11. Positioning bar chairs and spacers to achieve minimum edge cover and specified reinforcement placement

12. Pre-placement preparation, including cleaning formwork and removing excess material and debris, and transporting concrete safely

13. Placing concrete to specified depth and maintaining design strength during placement, including appropriate compaction controls where relevant

14. Screeding and finishing concrete to specification, including levelling, floating and applying the required finish (broomed, trowelled, wood-floated or machine finish)

15. Stripping and completing works, including denailing, cleaning and stacking formwork, curing techniques, final clean-up, waste management, and tool maintenance and storage
