INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safe Handling & Positioning of Dogging Tools & Equipment course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in safely handling, moving, sorting, positioning and storing dogging tools and equipment to support lifting operations, while meeting WHS, environmental, legislative and workplace requirements.

Safely handling and positioning dogging tools and equipment involves the controlled management of lifting accessories and related equipment so they remain serviceable, traceable, readily accessible and safely positioned for use before, during and after dogging activities. This work requires disciplined planning and coordination because dogging equipment can be heavy, awkward, and damage-prone, and poor handling or storage can create hazards such as crush injuries, trip hazards, damaged lifting gear, incorrect gear selection, or unsafe distribution of equipment around a worksite. Effective handling and positioning practices are essential to maintaining equipment integrity, ensuring compliance with inspection and reporting requirements, supporting efficient lifting operations, and preventing incidents associated with manual handling and mechanical handling interactions.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply dogging tool and equipment handling requirements, make informed judgements about safe handling methods and positioning, and recognise the practical steps required to move and store dogging tools and equipment safely under typical worksite conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you read work orders and associated documentation, clarify handling tasks with relevant persons, and plan work to comply with legislation, regulations, standards, codes, WHS, environmental and workplace requirements.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and control requirements, including selecting appropriate dogging tools and equipment for the task, completing serviceability checks, rectifying or reporting faults, and selecting and fitting PPE suitable for handling, moving, sorting, stacking and storing activities. It will also assess your knowledge of applying workplace and regulatory requirements such as JSEAs, SWMSs, signage, environmental and worksite safety plans, and reporting processes, and interpreting task plans and specifications that define where and how dogging tools and equipment must be handled and located.

You will also be assessed on practical handling, positioning and storage requirements, including moving dogging tools and equipment manually using safe manual handling techniques, and stacking or banding equipment for mechanical handling based on load type and the plant or equipment to be used. The assessment will examine your understanding of loading, unloading, moving and locating dogging tools and equipment at specified locations while safely assisting mechanical handling equipment operators, including using required signalling methods. It will also confirm your ability to sort equipment to suit load type and size, stack equipment to support identification, retrieval and task sequencing, protect equipment from physical damage and water damage, and store equipment clear of access ways to maintain safe distribution and movement paths. Finally, it will assess your knowledge of safely returning equipment to storage after tasks, cleaning, checking and maintaining dogging tools and equipment in line with manufacturer and workplace requirements, and completing clean-up activities including environmentally responsible waste management and storage practices for tools, equipment and materials.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely handling and positioning dogging tools and equipment, including planning and compliance, selecting and checking equipment, applying PPE and site controls, using safe manual and mechanical handling methods, assisting operators with signalling, sorting and protecting equipment for reliable use, maintaining equipment condition through cleaning and checks, and completing safe storage and work area clean-up—confirming your readiness to manage dogging tools and equipment safely in support of lifting operations.
