INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safe Handling & Storing of Roof Tiling Materials course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in receiving, handling, transferring, positioning, storing and removing roof tiling materials safely and efficiently, while meeting WHS, environmental, workplace, manufacturer and compliance requirements.

Safe handling and storing of roof tiling materials involves managing a range of roofing products and components so they can be moved from delivery points to storage areas, transferred to roof level, distributed safely across roof structures, and removed as surplus or waste without creating hazards or causing damage. Because roof tiling materials can be heavy, awkward, brittle, sharp-edged, or hazardous, and because work often occurs near edges and at height, safe performance depends on disciplined planning, correct use of fall safety measures, effective manual handling techniques, and well-controlled storage and distribution methods. Effective material handling practices are essential to preventing falls, strains, crush injuries and dropped-object incidents, while also protecting material quality, maintaining safe access paths, and supporting an organised roof tiling workflow.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply roof tiling material handling requirements, make informed judgements about hazards, controls and safe handling methods, and recognise the practical steps required to manage materials safely from receipt through to final clean-up. You will be required to demonstrate how you read and interpret work instructions, plans and specifications, plan the sequence of material handling tasks, and ensure all work is planned to comply with WHS obligations, environmental requirements, workplace procedures, manufacturer specifications, NCC and Australian Standards, and relevant laws and regulations.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and safety control requirements, including selecting and using PPE appropriate to each stage of receiving, moving, loading, distributing, removing and disposing of roof tiling materials, inspecting the work site to assess hazards, and applying risk controls such as signage and barricades. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting tools and equipment for handling roof tiling materials, completing serviceability checks and reporting faults, and checking received materials against schedules, plans, quality requirements and specifications to ensure correct materials are used and defects or shortages are identified early.

You will also be assessed on practical handling, transfer and storage requirements, including identifying the handling characteristics of different roof tiling materials and applying safe handling techniques for materials such as tiles, battens, sarking, flashings, fixings, adhesives, bedding and pointing materials, lead, slate and shingles. The assessment will examine your understanding of confirming fall safety devices are installed correctly before materials are handled and transferred to the roof, assembling and erecting a material elevator where required to support safe transfer to roof level, and sorting materials by type and size and stacking for safe storage, identification and efficient retrieval in the correct task sequence. It will also confirm your capability to transfer and load materials onto the roof using safe manual handling techniques, support loads correctly and distribute materials evenly to suit roof loading considerations, manage surplus materials safely on the roof without creating trip hazards or damaging roof components, identify hazardous materials for separate handling and escalation in line with SDS and SWMS/JSA requirements, and remove surplus materials and waste safely from roof to ground level while clearing roof areas, guttering and downpipes of debris.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safe handling and storing of roof tiling materials, including planning and compliance, selecting PPE and equipment, checking materials to specification, applying safe handling techniques for different roofing materials, confirming fall safety controls and using material transfer methods such as elevators, storing and distributing materials safely on and off the roof, managing surplus and hazardous materials correctly, and completing clean-up, recycling and storage processes—confirming your readiness to manage roof tiling materials safely within roof tiling operations.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Reading and interpreting work instructions, plans and specifications, and planning the sequence of roof tiling material handling tasks

2.    Planning all work to comply with WHS, environmental requirements, workplace requirements, manufacturer specifications, NCC, Australian Standards, and relevant laws and regulations

3.    Selecting and using PPE for each stage of receiving, moving, loading, distributing, removing and disposing of roof tiling materials

4.    Inspecting the work site, assessing hazards, and applying risk controls including signage and barricades

5.    Selecting tools and equipment for handling roof tiling materials, checking serviceability, and reporting faults

6.    Checking received roof tiling materials against material schedules, plans, quality requirements and specifications

7.    Identifying handling characteristics of roof tiling materials and applying safe handling techniques for each material type (e.g., tiles, battens, sarking, flashings, fixings, adhesives, bedding, pointing materials, lead, slate, shingles)

8.    Confirming fall safety devices are installed correctly before handling and transferring materials to the roof

9.    Handling, assembling and erecting a material elevator at the job location to support safe transfer of materials to roof level

10. Sorting roof tiling materials by type and size and stacking for safe storage, easy identification, and efficient retrieval in task sequence

11. Transferring and loading roof tiling materials onto the roof using safe manual handling techniques, supporting loads correctly, and distributing materials evenly to suit roof loading considerations

12. Handling surplus roof tiling materials safely on the roof and preparing them for removal without creating trip hazards or damage to roof components

13. Identifying hazardous materials for separate handling and escalation to authorised personnel, including following SDS and SWMS/JSA requirements where applicable

14. Loading and transferring surplus materials and waste from roof to ground level, and clearing roof areas, guttering and downpipes of waste and surplus material

15. Completing clean-up by clearing the work area, storing or disposing of materials, reusing or recycling in line with environmental and regulatory requirements, and cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing tools and equipment to manufacturer and workplace requirements
