INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Enter & Work in Confined Spaces course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in preparing for, entering, working in, and exiting confined spaces safely, while meeting permit conditions, regulatory requirements, and workplace procedures for hazard control and emergency readiness.

Safely entering and working in confined spaces involves performing tasks in areas that are not designed for continuous occupancy and that may have restricted entry or exit, limited ventilation, and the potential for hazardous atmospheres or other high-risk conditions. This work requires disciplined planning, strict control of access, and the correct use of permits, isolation processes and monitoring systems because confined space incidents can escalate rapidly and often involve exposure to toxic gases, oxygen deficiency or enrichment, flammable atmospheres, engulfment, heat stress and restricted rescue access. Effective confined space practices are essential to preventing serious injury or fatality, ensuring that hazards are identified and controlled before entry, and maintaining safe conditions throughout the task.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply confined space requirements, make informed judgements about hazards and controls, and recognise the practical steps required to manage entry and work activities in compliance with workplace and regulatory expectations. You will be required to demonstrate how you confirm work requirements and job scope from work instructions and work area information, and how you access, interpret and apply confined space documentation, procedures and regulatory requirements relevant to the task.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of core preparation and control requirements, including correctly identifying confined spaces and understanding what makes an area a confined space, identifying hazards, risks and environmental issues, and implementing control measures in line with workplace procedures. It will also assess your knowledge of confined space entry permits, including obtaining the permit, confirming authorisation, and complying with permit conditions, as well as selecting and using PPE correctly for confined space entry and work activities.

You will also be assessed on operational roles, monitoring and emergency readiness requirements, including the responsibilities and communication obligations of the stand-by person, the use of signage and barriers to isolate and control the confined space area, and the selection and checking of tools and equipment for confined space tasks. The assessment will examine your understanding of rescue equipment identification, selection and positioning in line with permit requirements, atmospheric testing and monitoring before entry and during work, and the application of tagging and lock-out procedures to isolate hazards and support safe entry and exit.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely entering and working in confined spaces, including confirming job scope, applying documentation and permit controls, selecting PPE, implementing isolation and atmospheric monitoring, coordinating stand-by and emergency arrangements, completing safe entry, work and exit procedures, and finalising post-job inspection, permit close-out, clean-up and equipment maintenance records—confirming your readiness to work safely in confined spaces within construction and civil environments.
