INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Erect & Dismantle Restricted Height Scaffolding course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, erecting, inspecting, altering, dismantling and cleaning up modular scaffolding systems up to 4 metres in a safe, compliant and workplace-aligned manner.

Safely erecting and dismantling restricted height scaffolding involves establishing temporary work platforms that protect workers from falls while supporting planned loads, access and work activities at height. This requires careful planning using workplace information such as diagrams, sketches, plans and manufacturer specifications, applying relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, and following Australian Standards for scaffolding footings and erection practices. Effective scaffolding work is critical because errors in planning, load assessment, component selection, footing stability, bracing, or edge protection can result in scaffold failure, falls from height, dropped objects, access hazards and significant harm to workers and others in the work area.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply scaffolding planning and erection requirements, make sound judgements about hazards, loadings and controls, and recognise the practical steps required to safely coordinate and complete restricted height scaffold work within a team environment. You will be required to demonstrate how you review scaffolding tasks and workplace-specific information with associated personnel, identify and incorporate environmental protection and legislative requirements into planning, and identify hazards, control measures and required equipment from JSA and SWMS documentation.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of core planning and preparation requirements, including calculating scaffolding and material requirements for a modular system up to 4 metres, determining expected loadings on the scaffold and supporting structure using load tables, and identifying site access and egress routes to integrate into planning and emergency considerations. It will also assess your knowledge of applying risk control measures such as installing safety signs and barriers, selecting and using PPE, selecting plant, tools and equipment, checking serviceability, rectifying or reporting faults, and selecting, preparing and locating materials using safe handling and safe storage techniques.

You will also be assessed on practical erection, inspection and completion requirements, including inspecting scaffolding components for damage, corrosion and wear and labelling, rejecting or repairing items as required, establishing scaffold footings in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and ground conditions, and erecting scaffolding in line with regulations, planned risk prevention measures, acceptable safe work practices and manufacturer specifications. The assessment will examine your understanding of inspecting critical structural and safety areas, checking current scaffold use for compliance with the scaffold type, reviewing whether planned modifications are required, carrying out repairs or alterations, completing inspection logs and handover requirements, and dismantling scaffolding in the reverse sequence. It will also confirm your knowledge of clearing work areas, disposing of, re-using or recycling materials appropriately, and cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace requirements.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely erecting and dismantling restricted height scaffolding up to 4 metres, including planning for environmental and legislative compliance, calculating materials and loadings, applying JSA/SWMS controls, establishing compliant footings, erecting and inspecting safe work platforms, completing handover documentation, and dismantling and cleaning up safely—confirming your readiness to perform restricted height scaffolding tasks reliably within construction site operations.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Reviewing the scaffolding task and workplace-specific information, then confirming requirements with associated personnel

2.    Identifying and incorporating environmental protection and legislative requirements into scaffolding planning and preparation

3.    Identifying hazards, control measures and required equipment from JSA and SWMS for restricted height scaffolding work

4.    Calculating scaffolding and material requirements for a modular system up to 4 metres, including bays, lifts and edge protection components

5.    Determining expected loadings on the scaffold and supporting structure using load tables and planned work use

6.    Identifying site access and egress routes and integrating these into scaffolding setup, movement and emergency planning

7.    Applying risk controls during preparation, including installing safety signs and barriers and selecting and using required PPE

8.    Selecting plant, tools and equipment, checking serviceability, and rectifying or reporting faults before use

9.    Selecting, preparing and positioning scaffolding materials using safe manual handling and safe storage practices

10. Inspecting scaffolding components for damage, corrosion and wear, and labelling, rejecting or repairing items as required

11. Establishing scaffold footings in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and site ground conditions

12. Erecting modular scaffolding up to 4 metres in line with regulations, planned risk prevention measures, safe work practices and manufacturer specifications

13. Inspecting critical structural and safety areas, checking current use for compliance with scaffold type, and identifying needs for modification

14. Completing scaffold alterations or repairs where required, then completing inspection logs and formal handover requirements

15. Dismantling scaffolding in reverse sequence, clearing the work area, disposing/reusing/recycling materials correctly, and cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment to manufacturer and workplace requirements
