INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Handle & Prepare Bricklaying & Blocklaying Materials course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in receiving, handling, positioning and preparing bricklaying and blocklaying materials safely and efficiently, including calculating quantities, controlling hazards, and preparing mortar to the required consistency in accordance with workplace procedures and environmental requirements.

Safely handling and preparing bricklaying and blocklaying materials involves managing heavy and repetitive materials such as bricks, blocks, sand, cement and associated products so they can be unloaded, moved, staged and used in the correct sequence without injury, waste or disruption to site access. This work requires accurate interpretation of plans, specifications and relevant codes, effective planning and prioritisation, and strict application of safety and environmental documentation because risks can include manual handling strain, crush injuries, trips, dust exposure and plant interaction during mechanical handling. Effective material preparation supports safe work flow, reduces re-handling, protects material quality, and ensures the mortar mix is suitable for laying requirements and consistent across the job.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply safe material handling and preparation requirements, make informed judgements about hazard controls, staging and mixing processes, and recognise the practical steps required to support bricklaying and blocklaying work under typical site conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you select, fit and use PPE appropriate to material handling tasks, read and interpret bricklaying and blocklaying requirements from current plans, specifications and codes, and apply relevant workplace procedures and safety and environmental documentation to all material handling activities.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of planning and preparation requirements, including calculating brick, block and associated material quantities required for the task, determining job priorities and sequencing tasks in consultation with others on site, identifying potential hazards and implementing appropriate control measures, and selecting tools and equipment while checking condition and reporting damage or faults to the appropriate person. It will also assess your knowledge of checking delivered materials against delivery dockets, identifying damage or inconsistencies and reporting them promptly, and preparing the work area so loading, unloading and movement of materials can be completed safely and efficiently.

You will also be assessed on practical onsite handling and mixing requirements, including selecting and applying appropriate manual and mechanical handling methods, sorting, handling and positioning bricks and blocks to suit the laying sequence, and maintaining clear walkways and safe access. The assessment will examine your understanding of applying safe manual handling techniques when unloading, lifting, moving and loading bricks, blocks and related materials, and setting up, levelling and stabilising a cement mixer while completing pre-operation checks. It will also confirm your capability to mix mortar using correct ingredient ratios and processes, including bucket gauging, and confirm mortar quality and consistency with the relevant person to ensure it is suitable for the intended work.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely handling and preparing bricklaying and blocklaying materials, including using PPE, working to plans and specifications, calculating material quantities, planning and sequencing tasks, controlling hazards, selecting and checking tools and equipment, verifying deliveries, preparing safe work areas, applying safe manual and mechanical handling methods, positioning materials for efficient laying, setting up and checking mixers, producing mortar to the required ratios and consistency, and completing clean-up, waste management and secure storage—confirming your readiness to support bricklaying and blocklaying operations safely and effectively.
