INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Safely Handle & Store Wall & Floor Tiling Materials course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in safely handling, sorting, stacking, distributing, storing and removing wall and floor tiling products and materials in accordance with workplace procedures, manufacturer requirements, and applicable WHS, environmental and compliance obligations.
Safely handling and storing wall and floor tiling materials involves managing tiles and associated products so they can be received, checked, moved, mixed, staged and stored without injury to workers, damage to materials, or disruption to site access and workflow. Because tiling materials can be heavy, brittle, sharp-edged and chemically hazardous (particularly adhesives and grouts), safe work depends on disciplined planning, correct PPE, careful site hazard control and correct mixing and storage methods aligned to safety data sheets. Effective handling practices are essential to reducing breakage and waste, maintaining batch control, supporting efficient installation sequencing, and preventing manual handling injuries, slips, trips, and exposure to hazardous substances.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply tiling material handling requirements, make informed judgements about safe work methods, storage and distribution practices, and recognise the practical steps required to manage materials safely across the full task cycle from receipt to clean-up. You will be required to demonstrate how you read and interpret task work instructions, plan the sequence of handling and storage activities, select and use PPE appropriate to each stage of receiving, handling, mixing, distributing and removing tiling materials, and plan work to comply with laws and regulations, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements, manufacturer specifications, workplace requirements, drawings and specifications.
This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and worksite control requirements, including inspecting the work site, assessing hazards and applying risk controls such as signage and barricades, selecting tools and equipment for handling tiling materials, checking serviceability and reporting faults, and checking received tiling products and materials for correct quality and quantity against task requirements. It will also assess your knowledge of handling tiling materials in accordance with safe work method statements and safe work practices for lifting, carrying, placing and stacking, and correctly handling, proportioning, mixing and storing tiling materials such as adhesives, grouts and related compounds in line with product instructions and safety requirements.
You will also be assessed on practical sorting, stacking, distribution and end-of-task requirements, including sorting tiling products and materials by type and size to support identification, batch control and task sequence, stacking materials to maintain stability, protect edges and surfaces and keep access ways clear, and applying safe techniques for handling and storing large format tiles to prevent breakage and injury. The assessment will examine your ability to distribute tiling products and materials to the job location safely by planning routes and placement to minimise re-handling, manage surplus materials safely and effectively in accordance with safety data sheets and workplace procedures, identify hazardous materials for separate handling by authorised personnel using escalation and isolation requirements, and recover and transfer tiling products and materials from the job location for storage or disposal. It will also confirm your understanding of completing environmentally responsible waste management, and cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and workplace requirements.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely handling and storing wall and floor tiling materials, including planning to work instructions and compliance requirements, applying PPE and site risk controls, checking materials to quality and quantity requirements, using safe manual handling and mixing procedures, sorting and stacking materials safely including large format tiles, distributing materials efficiently to the work area, managing surplus and hazardous materials correctly, and completing clean-up, waste management and tool maintenance—confirming your readiness to handle tiling materials safely within wall and floor tiling operations.
