INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Select & Use Construction Tools & Equipment course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in selecting, operating and maintaining construction tools and equipment safely, in line with work instructions, manufacturer requirements and WHS obligations.

Safely selecting and using construction tools and equipment begins with planning and preparation. It requires reviewing work instructions and planning the construction task sequence so that the right tools and equipment are selected for each stage of work. You must be able to select appropriate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools and equipment for the task, understand tool functions, operating principles and correct applications, and ensure tools are used only for their intended purpose. The assessment will explore how you check tool and equipment serviceability and identify faults before use, report damaged, faulty or unsafe tools, and isolate them according to site procedures so they cannot be used until made safe.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to apply safe operating practices consistent with WHS and manufacturer requirements. You will be required to demonstrate how you select and use task-appropriate PPE for each stage of work, conduct pre-operational checks to manufacturers’ specifications, and apply WHS requirements for safe tool operation, including use of guards, safe starts, exclusion zones and stable work positioning. The assessment will also examine how you use hand tools safely and accurately to workplace quality standards, and use power and pneumatic tools safely in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace requirements.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of the specific safety controls associated with powered equipment. You will need to show how you manage electrical and pneumatic safety controls, including safe use of extension leads, RCDs, compressors, hoses and air supply checks, and how you control common tool-related hazards such as cuts, kickback, dust, noise, vibration and flying debris. The assessment will also examine your ability to clean up work areas to meet safety, waste disposal and materials handling requirements so that hazards are removed and the site remains organised and compliant.

You will also be assessed on post-use responsibilities that support ongoing safety and tool reliability. This includes maintaining tools and equipment through basic checks, sharpening and minor upkeep within your role, and storing and securing tools and equipment correctly. You will be required to demonstrate how you complete post-use checks, identify emerging faults and complete fault reporting so that tools remain safe, serviceable and ready for future work.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of safely selecting and using construction tools and equipment, including planning tool selection from work instructions, checking serviceability, applying PPE and WHS controls, operating hand, power and pneumatic tools safely, managing electrical and pneumatic hazards, and completing cleaning, maintenance, storage and reporting tasks—confirming your readiness to work safely and efficiently with construction tools and equipment on site.
