INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Safely Use Roof Tiling Tools & Equipment course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in selecting, checking, operating, maintaining and storing roof tiling tools and equipment safely and effectively in accordance with WHS requirements, environmental obligations, manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures.

Safely using roof tiling tools and equipment involves applying correct methods and controls when working with hand tools and powered equipment used to measure, mark, cut, fix and finish roof tiling components. Because roof tiling work is commonly performed at height and often involves sharp edges, cutting blades, electrical leads, compressed air supply, dust and flying debris, safe work depends on disciplined planning, correct PPE selection, effective worksite hazard controls and strict adherence to manufacturer operating requirements. Effective tool and equipment use is essential to preventing injury, avoiding tool-related damage to roofing materials, maintaining consistent work quality and ensuring equipment remains serviceable and compliant for ongoing use.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply roof tiling tool and equipment requirements, make informed judgements about selection, serviceability and safe operating procedures, and recognise the practical steps required to carry out roof tiling tasks safely under typical work conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you read and interpret work instructions, plan the sequence of roof tiling work involving tools and equipment, and plan work to comply with laws and regulations, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements, manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of preparation and safety control requirements, including selecting and using PPE appropriate to each stage of tool and equipment use, inspecting the work site to assess hazards and applying risk controls such as signage and barricades, and identifying the functions and limitations of roof tiling tools and equipment so they are matched correctly to task requirements. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting tools and equipment, completing serviceability checks and reporting faults in line with workplace procedures, and confirming power tools and electrical leads are tested and tagged before use.

You will also be assessed on operational practices for safe tool use, including conducting pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer specifications, checking guards, blades, attachments and switches to confirm safe operation, and connecting power and or compressed air supply to the work area safely and correctly. The assessment will examine your understanding of performing start-up and shut-down procedures to manufacturer specifications, using roof tiling tools safely and effectively including measuring and marking tasks, switching off and locating tools safely when not in immediate use to prevent hazards and damage, and inspecting, maintaining and tagging tools and equipment during and after use while reporting faults as required. It will also confirm your knowledge of cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing roof tiling tools and equipment correctly in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace quality standards.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for safely using roof tiling tools and equipment, including planning work to compliance requirements, selecting PPE and controlling worksite hazards, choosing the correct tools for the task, confirming testing and tagging, completing pre-operational checks, operating powered tools safely with correct start-up and shut-down procedures, managing power and air supply safely, and completing inspection, maintenance, cleaning and storage processes—confirming your readiness to use roof tiling tools and equipment safely within roof tiling operations.
