INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Surface Drainage & Dewatering on Civil Construction Sites course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and carrying out surface drainage and dewatering activities safely and effectively, including controlling water on site, protecting the environment, and using temporary drainage and pumping systems in line with workplace and site requirements.

Surface drainage and dewatering on civil construction sites involve managing surface water and seepage so that work areas remain stable, accessible and safe, and so that water runoff does not cause erosion, sediment discharge or damage to surrounding areas and services. This work requires careful interpretation of job requirements and documentation, selection of suitable controls and equipment, and disciplined management of discharge pathways because uncontrolled water can undermine excavations, destabilise slabs and working platforms, damage temporary works, increase slip and trip hazards, and create environmental non-compliance through sediment-laden runoff. Effective drainage and dewatering practices are therefore essential for maintaining productivity, protecting infrastructure, and meeting environmental and regulatory obligations.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply drainage and dewatering requirements, make informed judgements about hazards, environmental controls and equipment selection, and recognise the practical steps required to manage site water under changing conditions. You will be required to demonstrate how you obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm drainage and dewatering work requirements, and how you access, interpret and apply the documentation required for draining and dewatering activities in accordance with workplace procedures.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of safety preparation and control requirements, including obtaining and applying emergency procedures and identifying steps required to respond to emergencies, selecting and wearing PPE in line with site requirements, and confirming environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements while applying site controls to isolate and protect the work area. It will also assess your knowledge of identifying hazards and environmental issues, implementing control measures within scope, and escalating hazards or issues to relevant personnel when conditions exceed your authority or require additional controls.

You will also be assessed on practical drainage, sediment control and pumping requirements, including selecting plant, tools and equipment and checking for faults, and identifying, confirming and locating materials needed for drainage systems, sedimentation controls and pumping activities. The assessment will examine your understanding of positioning sedimentation controls and constructing sedimentation control barriers, positioning geotextiles correctly for erosion and sediment management, establishing temporary drainage systems to drain or divert water into stormwater drainage systems, removing slab and site surface water and directing flows into temporary drains, and restoring safe site conditions by filling surface holes and depressions and draining water effectively. It will also confirm your capability to determine sump position and construct sumps to job specifications, install and locate surface or submersible pumps correctly, pump water to temporary drainage systems, disperse discharged water to site requirements, and complete clean-up including waste management and cleaning, maintaining and storing tools and equipment to manufacturer and site requirements.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for surface drainage and dewatering on civil construction sites, including confirming job requirements and documentation, applying emergency and PPE controls, implementing environmental and traffic management protections, selecting and checking equipment and materials, installing sediment controls and temporary drainage systems, constructing sumps and operating pumps, managing discharge appropriately, and completing clean-up and equipment maintenance—confirming your readiness to manage site water control tasks reliably within civil construction operations.
