INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Work Safely at Heights in Construction Sites course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning and performing work at height safely, including selecting and applying appropriate fall prevention controls, using and inspecting fall protection equipment correctly, and maintaining a controlled work area in line with SWMS, workplace procedures and regulatory requirements.

Working safely at heights on construction sites involves undertaking tasks where a person could fall from one level to another and be injured, or where falling objects could cause harm to people below. This type of work requires disciplined planning and coordination because risks can change rapidly due to weather, access constraints, movement of plant and materials, fragile or unstable surfaces, and the suitability of fall prevention systems. Effective work-at-heights practice is essential to preventing falls, ensuring safety systems are correctly selected and installed, maintaining compliance with site controls, and protecting both workers and the public from height-related hazards.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret and apply work-at-heights requirements, make informed judgements about fall prevention methods and equipment selection, and recognise the practical steps required to complete height-based tasks without exposure to uncontrolled fall risk. You will be required to demonstrate how you interpret work orders and drawings, consult with relevant persons to confirm the task, location, method and equipment or plant to be used, and participate in the development of a task-specific SWMS that accurately reflects the planned work activity.

This assessment will confirm your understanding of planning and control requirements, including selecting appropriate work-at-heights control measures such as fall restraint and fall arrest options, determining suitable anchor point locations for harness-based work, and reviewing the completed SWMS to clarify issues and confirm shared understanding before commencing. It will also assess your knowledge of selecting task-appropriate PPE, checking serviceability and reporting problems before accessing the work area, identifying unstable, fragile or brittle surfaces and applying control measures, and inspecting fall protection equipment to confirm serviceability and report defects.

You will also be assessed on practical setup, access and work procedures, including selecting and installing signage and barricades to isolate the work area in line with the SWMS or safe work procedures, fitting and installing fall protection equipment within authority and licensing limitations, and confirming that fall protection systems, scaffolds, work platforms and barriers are adequately installed and certified where required. The assessment will examine your understanding of connecting to fall protection equipment, including temporary anchors, without exposure to uncontrolled fall risk, consulting with relevant persons to confirm equipment is correctly fitted and adjusted, and accessing, working and traversing safely while remaining connected to the fall prevention system. It will also confirm your knowledge of maintaining communication, keeping controls in place, managing falling-object risks when moving tools and materials, and monitoring and adjusting control measures as conditions change, including safe exit and removal of tools and materials in line with worksite procedures, safety and environmental requirements.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements for working safely at heights on construction sites, including SWMS participation and confirmation, selection of appropriate fall prevention controls, identification of fragile surfaces, inspection and correct use of fall protection equipment, installation of signage and barricades, safe connection and movement while working at height, and ongoing monitoring and adjustment of controls—confirming your readiness to perform height-based tasks safely within construction site operations.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Interpreting work orders, drawings, and consulting relevant persons to confirm the work-at-heights task, location, method and equipment or plant to be used

2.    Participating in development of the task-specific SWMS and confirming it reflects the planned work activity

3.    Selecting appropriate work-at-heights control measures in line with workplace and regulatory requirements, including fall restraint and fall arrest options

4.    Determining suitable anchor point locations for harness-based work to allow safe access to the work area

5.    Reviewing the completed SWMS, clarifying issues, and confirming shared understanding with relevant persons before commencing

6.    Selecting task-appropriate PPE, checking serviceability, and reporting problems before accessing the work area

7.    Identifying unstable, fragile or brittle work surfaces and applying control measures to prevent falls through or from surfaces

8.    Inspecting fall protection equipment (restraint and arrest devices), confirming serviceability, and reporting defects

9.    Selecting and installing required signage and barricades to isolate the work area in accordance with the SWMS or safe work procedures

10. Fitting and installing fall protection equipment within authority and licensing limitations, including harnesses, lanyards, inertia reels and temporary anchor systems

11. Confirming fall protection systems, scaffold or work platforms and barriers are adequately installed and certified where required

12. Connecting to fall protection equipment, including temporary anchors, without exposure to an uncontrolled fall risk

13. Consulting with relevant persons to confirm fall protection equipment and safety systems are correctly fitted, adjusted and suitable for the task

14. Accessing, working and traversing safely while remaining connected to the fall prevention system, maintaining communication, keeping controls in place, and managing falling-object risks when moving tools and materials

15. Monitoring and adjusting control measures for changing conditions, then exiting safely and removing tools and materials in line with worksite procedures, safety and environmental requirements
