INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Support People Experiencing Loss & Grief course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in providing sensitive, safe and appropriate support to people experiencing loss, grief, bereavement and trauma, while working within your role, organisational policies and legal and ethical obligations.
Support for people experiencing loss and grief begins with understanding the broad spectrum of loss, grief, bereavement and trauma, and how these can affect individuals, families and communities in different and sometimes unexpected ways. It requires the ability to recognise a wide range of reactions to loss and grief, including complex and disenfranchised grief responses, and to appreciate how social, cultural, ethnic and spiritual differences influence the way grief is expressed and what type of support is most helpful. You must be able to engage empathically with people using sensitivity, professionalism and courtesy, select verbal and non-verbal communication that responds to the person’s emotional needs, and recognise when someone is having difficulty coping so they can be linked or referred for further help.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to respond safely and responsibly where there may be health and safety risks associated with grief and loss. You will be required to demonstrate how you identify potential health and safety risks, including possible indicators that a person may be at serious risk of harm to themselves, and how you act within your role to ensure appropriate referrals are made to qualified professionals or emergency services. The assessment will also examine your capacity to provide clear information about grief, bereavement support services and other resources, and to use a range of strategies and communication techniques suitable for both formal and informal grief and bereavement support, while applying duty of care, privacy and professional boundaries at all times.
This assessment will also confirm your understanding of the impact that loss and grief support work can have on you as a worker, and the importance of maintaining your own wellbeing. You will need to show how you monitor your own stress and recognise risks to self when providing grief and bereavement support, and how you use self-care strategies, supervision, debriefing and support services to manage this impact. The assessment will explore your understanding of the stress vulnerability model in the context of loss and grief, and how you reflect on the outcomes of support you provide, review your practice and contribute to continuous improvement. In addition, you will be required to demonstrate how you identify when further or ongoing support is required and act within your role to help facilitate access to that support.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret and apply the core requirements of supporting people experiencing loss and grief, including recognising diverse grief responses, communicating with empathy and respect, responding safely to potential risk, working within legal and ethical boundaries, looking after your own wellbeing and reviewing your practice—confirming your readiness to provide safe, sensitive and appropriate support to people at times of significant loss.
